Default Hello from Vermont

Hi Folks,
My wife and I will be making our first visit to The Villages next February with a hoped-for retirement date of spring 2012. We're reading the books and canvasing the web in the meantime. This forum is a really wonderful resource. I can't tell you how helpful it has been thus far during our "research phase". Thanks!!!
We think, (at least at this stage), we'd like a home within walking distance of the Lake Sumter Landing area. What villages should be be looking into? A ten minute golf cart run sounds about right too. Thanks in advance.

Consider:

Caroline, Virginia Trace, Bridgeport at Lake Sumter. I'd consider any of these as "within walking distance."

Closest of all would be the Lakeshore Cottages, which once were Lifestyle Rentals, but are now being sold, fully furnished. They begin at $450,000 and go up a lot from there. I imagine the furnishings are, shall we say, tired. I stayed in one in Oct '04 and it was already slightly weary looking.

You can spread out with a golf cart. I'm in Sunset Pointe and just about 10 minutes from Market Square. So, you can expand to Sunset Pointe, Sabal Chase, Mallory Square. Beyond that you're looking at 15-20 minutes!

Welcome to this board. Pay 'ttention and you'll learn virtually everything you need to know.

Thanks SWR. Based on home costs we may well find ourselves a bit farther out than "short walking distance" from Lake Sumter Landing . Again, thanks for the reply.
Cold up here in Vermont. Wood stove running. Snow on the ground this morning, a lot of sun and very brisk winds.

Be prepared Burkey, after your LST you'll be hooked. We did our first visit over 4 years ago and haven't been the same since. We have TV under our skin. We are getting close to making a decision on where/what to purchase. Good luck in your search. This site is the greatest resource you can find on TV.

Welcome to you.

It is not more or less expensive to buy "further out". Each village has a variety of villas, cottages, designers and some have premiers (All different model series) too. Lake Sumter Landing is NOT where all the action is in my view. AND not where the grocery , tons of restaurants and all the other stores most people frequent. We rarely go to Lake Sumter Landing, but frequently go to the shopping centers and go to the college and to the rec centers for classes and fun things. There is nothing here that isn't close to whatever you want to do and where you want to be (including Lake Sumter Landing). It is really NOT the downtown area in the traditional sense...but everything is a new concept here. The golf courses and pickleball and tennis courts at the rec centers are scattered throughout.

Oh dear new one.... You just aren't going to believe this place. We hosted friends of friends the other day who sort of unexpectedly stopped by. They were absolutely "got". They had NO intention of looking at The Villages and fell in love with it right in front of our eyes.

It happens all the time.

Welcome. PM me if you want to see inside a residents home when you are here. There is always something cold to drink at our place.

You are gonna like it here.

GG

Agree 100% with Gracie. LSL is just one of many places that you can go/shop and do. Yes, the Town Squares are where the nightly music is, BUT you will find the Country Clubs also have entertainment and so do some other places within TV or just slightly outside. You will find like we did, that all of the nightly entertainment is equal. So you will begin to know which ones you like and which ones to miss at the Town Squares. So then you do the other things and places.

Also if you still want close to LSL, be advised that you are limiting pretty much to resale exept for the LakeShore cottages, which we feel are way over priced for what they are, and the new cottages they are just starting west of The Waterfront Inn.

The outpouring of information is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. It sounds like our original idea of "needing" to be near LSL isn't as necessary as we might have thought from our initial readings.
Our retirement target date of 2012 is contingent on the sale of our home here in northern Vermont but we continue to think positively that a good sale will happen in the spring of that year.
We'll continue to "lurk and learn" around this forum and ask questions as needed. Again, thanks for the warm welcome. We'll be down your way next February for our initial visit.
