Mail Question
I'll be coming down to The Villages soon from Maine as a new seasonal resident (I don't like the term snowbird ) and have a question about forwarding mail. My bank has told me that the Post Office will not forward tax documents like 1099's and the like. Has anyone heard about this? Has it been a problem? How has it been dealt with?

We are also from Maine but we are part-timers in the Villages for now. I would hope that you would be changing your residency to Florida to get out of the income tax and take advantage of the homestead exemption in Fl. That is the first thing we will do when we become snowbirds. Mail forwarding so far has worked for us. As far as 1099's I would think that since you would be in Fl. when they are mailed you would just provide that address to the sender. Of course you should talk to the folks at the post office for the real word on the subject.

Love Maine
For now I will only be a seasonal resident (5 months) as I dearly love my Maine home in an active adult community surrounding a fine 9 hole par 35 Scottish style golf course. Perhaps some day I will stretch my time in The Villages so that I can switch to being a Florida resident.
I will try mail forwarding and get any missed tax docs via the internet. |

Hi John,
Not sure about forwarding of IRS docs. One alternative is to have friends pick up your mail and send to you down here. We are not retired yet, but once we are we will be summers in Port Clyde and winters here. We usually stop in Topsham for gas/groceries as a good breaking point when we drive to Maine. k

John -
I spoke with my mailman directly and arranged for him to save my weekly mail and then bundle it into a large envelope - and he sends it to me weekly c/o general delivery here in Lady Lake. Delivery takes 3days from NJ. It is costing me approx $5/wk, a sincere cash thank you and an occassional box of oranges/grapefruits/honeybells! I'm not sure that meets the USPS policy! See what your mailperson might be able to do for you before you go to the main P.O.- unless you live in a town like Denmark, ME where my vacation home is - and where everybody knows your name and your business - all 700+ residents!

We pay $15.00 per week to have our mail sent here from NY..........the free forwarding service left a lot to be desired as does the pay service.
