this is on the next block down from me about 100 yds. away... a truck delivering roofing shingles was parked there and the weight of the truck opened up the hole

Shhhh, don’t call it the “S” word, it’s a depression. The irony of it, the homeowners were getting a new roof so they could get affordable homeowners insurance! Bummer : (

IMO I bet it street drain or water main leak failure like 99% of all sinkholes in developed areas.
