Street Legal Golf Cart
I am seriously thinking about getting a street legal golf cart. But then I began thinking about how the insurance cost might compare to the $100-per-year insurance cost of a regular (non-street legal) cart. What kind of insurance cost are you folks with street legal carts experiencing?

Allstate
I am an Allstate agent. Low speed vehicles are subject to the Florida no fault law and must be added to your current auto policy. The coverage limits that you currently carry for Bodily Injury/Property Damage Liability, Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Coverage and Medical Payments should be the same. (you have option of stacked or non-stacked UM) You may also add comprehensive and collision coverage. Premiums vary depending on the underwriting.
If you currently have a low speed vehicle, check your policy and make sure you have the coverage that is required by Florida law and not a golf cart policy. By Florida law a golf cart can not exceed 20 miles per hour. |

I cannot swear to this, but my insurance agent in the villages told me that if I get a regular low speed golf cart policy it is about $100, but if I get a street legal cart the insurance costs are the same as for a car.
A call to an insurance agent should clear the issue up for you. |

Price may be a little lower than you carry on your auto. Much depends on the coverage you choose to purchase and underwriting. Bottom line, make sure you purchase the required insurance. I would hate for anyone to have an accident and find out they had no coverage because they purchased the wrong policy.

Just a thought.
Before we moved into TV for good, we wondered if a street legal cart what what we needed. Friends talked me out of it, suggesting we just try getting around in a regular card for a week or two first. Am glad they said what they did, and we ended up with a regular cart. The cart roadway system is very good, and have not found ourselves limited in getting around at all. Unless you are convinced that a street legal cart is what you really need/want, it may be worthwhile to experiment for a couple weeks first with a regular one. The greatest majority of people here have a regular cart. |
