Default Village of duval water retention area

On Thursday, May 5, 2016 District Staff observed a fish kill at the water retention area (WRA) near the Village of Duval. This WRA is not connected to any discharge from a wastewater treatment plant and only receives storm water runoff.
At this time the exact cause is unknown; however, this type of event can occur from temperature inversion, a rain event pulling the oxygen from the water and, of course, fertilizer/pesticide or some other type of runoff. Unfortunately, fish kills are not uncommon in Florida and the causes are varied.
The District will continue to provide additional information as it is available.
As always, we highly encourage all residents to contact the District Government to receive factual information pertaining to incidents, projects or rumors that you have heard.
District Customer Service can be reached at 352-753-4508, or you can visit our office located at 984 Old Mill Run in Lake Sumter Landing.
