I guess the good news is that Villagers may soon own ocean-front property.

It shocks me that so many of our leading politicians state that it is their opinion that global warming is a big hoax. I have several neighbors that have bought into this theory. I try to bring it to their attention that parts of the ice caps millions of years old are melting and falling into the ocean. Their response about global warming " this is just a natural cycle".

I'm back.

I’m not surprised at the variety of responses this posting has generated. Global warming exists. Global warming doesn’t exist. Global warming is a purely natural phenomenon. (Weren’t the Koch brothers surprised?) A politician is mocked. (Don’t know Senator Imhofe.) Individuals (like Al Gore) are suspect if (1) they believe in global warming and (2) they become rich or more rich. (Personally I object way more to those who get rich from the human and property destruction of war, which we’ve seen more than once in our lifetimes.) Some have “agendas” leading them, for one example, to tear down this “popular” news story by the Weather Channel (which, after all, is not a pure academic setting performing significant and heavily documented research in an area where a controlled experiment is virtually impossible). It’s not “warming,” it’s a coming ice age. Wow! or Whew!

But where is the concern for those isolated souls who “settled” (likely many centuries ago) on low-lying islands or coasts and whose homes are disappearing under the waves, “subduction” notwithstanding. You can be sure that if global warming affected us the way it’s affecting these folks, some of whom already have had to be displaced from their homes of many generations, we might be less _________ [fill in the blank, depending on one’s views and “agendas”] and instead be more genuinely concerned about this issue and its human effect. That’s why I mentioned Florida—our home state—and the effect of rising sea levels stemming from global warming in a finite number of years. How easy it is for us to give at most a moment’s thought to something halfway around the world and then go back to our daily lives….

I agree. The warming is always talked about as "since records have been kept" about 120 years! The earth is 4 Billion years old!!! I've hiked on petrified ocean floor in Utah. I have friends that have found petrified squid bones in Wyoming. Most of the Islands around Florida (Jupiter Island ,Singer Island,) were under water a mere couple thousand years ago. It's a cycle and this too shall pass with or without us.

The problem I have with this article is that is measures ocean levels in one area of the world, not taking into account that India and Bangladesh are in a huge subduction zone. If the ocean were rising in this area at whatever the rate, it would be rising worldwide at the same rate and it is not. This article does not even mention erosion! The truth of the matter is some parts of the earth rise and some parts sink. A subduction zone sinks and moves under another part that is rising. This phenomenon is what is causing the Himalayas to grow inches/year. One indisputable fact is that when a tectonic plate moves under or over another plate the earth shakes, better know as an earthquake. This part of the world is very active in this regard. I am disheartened to see that the weather channel's website would post such an irresponsible article without taking into account all the facts. It's shameful.

For those who feel that this is an issue only on the other side of the world which we can therefore ignore, or that people far from us don’t really count, do these articles bring the issue of rising sea levels closer to us? Or are there those who will say, well, they chose to be on the coast, whereas here in TV our elevation is 80–90 feet, so we can keep our heads buried in the sand and ignore it while criticizing not only the Weather Channel but also those who see this as a serious WORLDWIDE problem that affects ALL OF US?

Moore Island More Deception

billethkid 09-04-2012 07:52 AM

if global warming is not a hoax, then it is an over blown subject that very few people really know anything about except what they read

The so called warming episodes have been a cyclic event for centuries. Since the advent of the 24/7 media and political gain has the subject been given much attention.

The measurements are in tenths of millimeters per year. What was the level 50 years ago? 150 years ago? 250 years ago? What have the trends over the years shown?

The natural heating and cooling of the earths temps has been cyclical. Media and politics aside.....this too will pass.

The subject of global warming is like the double edged question.....are you still beating your wife.....any answer is a wrong one!!!

I agree with two points made in the article about New Moore Island:

“The United States of America has been under attack from within since 1990 with the first Gulf War. Since then and after 9-11 we have had the largest removal of civil liberties and personal freedoms ever, since the founding of this country.”

And “Sinister forces at work in Washington go beyond that of mere Left or Right and corrupt both sides making either unacceptable to those who desire to live in a country that is supposed to be for and by the people rather than to and against them.”

This writer starts out with a clear explanation (assuming it’s true...) of the story of New Moore Island. However, once he shows his own paranoia and/or has to resort to name-calling (examples: “Global Warming Cult,” “Global Warming alarmists”), he has lost credence, IMHO. A quick read of his mini-biography before the article itself explains a lot. And this in a journal of “UFO and Paranormal News from Around the World”?! Is it noteworthy that nothing about this appears in Snopes.com?

Maybe he would also say that the rising sea levels and how they need to be addressed in Florida is not really happening but instead are a creation of the "Global Warming Cult." Tell that to the taxpayers of the areas where they have to cover the costs mentioned in the articles!

Alright. If Global warming is happening, And it appears to be, what can each of us DO besides not wasting, and reusing things and taking care of what we have? Which most of our generation has always done.

The rest is just rhetoric.

We can't force people to not to have a car or a kid or a pet, or can we? Just HOW far do we go, or can we go? or should we go? Some of us would always follow the rules, but others NEVER will.

We have emissions control on cars. We could stop using plastic that doesn't biodegrade.

Tell us, you who argue this issue, how do you see us as individuals doing more to keep noxious gasses from going skyward?

Get to the bottom line. What is reasonable to expect from us?

I have always chuckled when I saw a Save the Planet bumper sticker. It doesn't need saving never will. A couple maybe 3 hundred years after humans die off there will be no trace of us.
