I was too busy watching Kelly Reilly’s performance in the season finale of Yellowstone for the 100th time….

I think the director told her, "Keep the viewers on their toes - One minute be nice and the next minute be the biggest B**** possible". What a role. I'm not much for awards, but in this case, she certainly deserves one.

I think watching Yellowstone first allows 1883 to give more insight into the Dutton family and their fierce loyalty to their land. I am liking 1883 better even than Yellowstone. I find the settling of the West fascinating, and the character development in 1883 somehow gives the future Duttons more depth — from the perspective of the past. (I know that might sound a little backwards because I am saying I think it’s better to watch the future Duttons first.)

As I watch 1883, I find myself thinking about that Nature/Nurture thing that makes us who we are. It is also making me wonder about my own ancestors and why they settled where they did — in the Ohio Valley — after they arrived from Germany and England, mostly. And why did they leave their homes? (I guess I will never know.)

And, I have to say that I wonder if those whose ancestors settled the West are naturally tougher than the rest of us. Nature/Nurture?

But. . .I wonder about a lot of things, in general. :)

1883 is worth watching, I think, but not a good as Yellowstone. I cannot like Sam Elliot's character and don't think it's a good role for him. Tim McGraw is a better actor than I would have guessed.

So, Elsa Dutton. I wonder if at some point the relationship between her and Beth Dutton will be revealed? Grandmother? Great-grandmother? Aunt? Seems they are a lot alike in some respects.

McGraw plays James Dutton, the great-grandfather to Kevin Costner (John Dutton).

Since Elsa is the daughter of James Dutton (Tim McGraw) and Beth is the daughter of John Dutton (Kevin Costner) I think they are some sort ancient cousins.

I think you’re right.

The writers seem to be be tuning in to that nature/nurture thing that a lot of us probably wonder about as personality traits show themselves in families.

Anyone who has ever heard the words, “You are acting just like your fill in the blank with a relative from a previous generation,” then you know what I mean.

Nature? Nurture? I think we are both. Percentages will vary.

Like that old saying tells us, “What’s bred in the bone will come out in the flesh.”

I believe Elso Dutton gets killed by an Indian before she can ever produce children, if the opener for the show runs true.

I remember that scene. I don’t think that Beth and Elso would be related like that. Most likely great great aunt maybe.

What a silly response to her post...one has nothing to do with the other, except maybe to sneak in a rather dumb complaint.

Are you sure Elsa was killed in that scene? I’m not, so I guess I could go back and look.

Elsa is portrayed as a survivor, but maybe the writers decided to write her out anyway.

She is my favorite character, although in the first episode I thought she was over-acting a bit. But now, I think she is really good in the part. (I thought she should tuck that long blond hair up under her hat though when riding herd through dangerous territory. Of course, then she might not have met that hot guy from the tribe who watched out for her.)

I am going to check that opening scene when I get back to it. I am at least one episode behind now. I hope they do not write Elsa out.

I went back and watched the opening scenes. She is shot with an arrow through her midsection. They don’t show the outcome. The actress also appeared on Young Sheldon as Georgie’s girlfriend.

Apparently, there was a flashback scene in Yellowstone alluding to the relationship between John Dutton and his great grandfather. No mention of Elsa although she had two brothers.
