Boardwalk Empire
Anyone watch the first episode? What did you think? I was a huge Sopronos fan so I expect I will like this one. Big Steve Buscemi fan too!

Really enjoyed Boardwalk Empire. Kind of hard to see how they got away with all they did back in the 20s but then you think about a small town in California in 2010 and the ridiculous salaries of that town's officers.

I watched last nite. I liked it, but it was a little overly violent. Buscemi is great as always. Found it a little hard to follow, but being the initial episode it had to set up a lot of scenarios that will play out as the series continues.

After two episodes, we are hooked. Besides a great story, I love the depiction of the period. In that sense, it is much more ambitious than the Sopranos was.

I think it's grand. I'm really enjoying it. Sort of like The Sopranos meet Mad Men in terms of the excellent period costumes, etc.

Boardwalk
I saw the first episode. It was a bit violent, but I enjoyed it. I DVR'd the second episode last night and hope to watch it today. It is only a 5 part mini series. The 20s were an interesting time with Prohibition and all the bootlegging.

Saw the two episodes and like it very much........I can't wait for The Borgias' on Showtime. I was addicted to The Tudors and this looks just as good.

Watched the third episode tonight. Frankly, I don't know if I can hang in there with this show. I was a HUGE Sopranos fan and I just don't think this one measures up. I am not turned off by violence or nudity, but some of the violence in this series is simply gratuitous, and the nudity often seems a result of contrived events, such as the dressing room scene tonight, just to expose the nudity - doesn't seem to be promoting the story. I have been a fan of Steve Buscemi for years, but this part just doesn't seem to fit. I just don't see him as a kingpin, but more of a sidekick. The acting is not up to Soprano standards and this is not one of Marty Scorceses finer efforts IMO. Many of the characters acting seems forced and cardboard. I will keep trying, but if the stories don't get stronger, I am going to have to quit this one. BTW, I do agree that the period sets and costumes are compelling, and one of the stronger aspects of the show.

The story seems to be moving around from Atlantic City to New York to Chicago.
Not sure how many episodes in this mini series. Sources give different amounts from 8 to 10 to 12 episodes in the First Season. HBO renewed Boardwalk Empire for a second season. I will keep watching it but found the last episode (October 3, 2010) rather boring. |

I just haven't found the characters, or the plotline to be compelling or believeable. If I can't really see them as that person, I can't get into it. For example, in the Sopranos I could see all the characters as the person they portrayed, but I am having trouble with Nucky, his brother, Jimmy, the Fed,and the Irish widow. I will give them one more episode to grab me, but it is looking like Sunday Night Football will be getting me for the full game.
