Does anyone know how I can stop phone calls giving me the last chance to renew/buy a warranty on a car I haven't owned in years? Interestingly most come from an area code I recently called. My only solution at this point is not answering calls unless it's from a valid Caller ID that I know and let others ring through to my answering machine which they almost never do. Blocking the numbers doesn't help since they seem to have an endless supply, registering on the Do Not Call List doesn't help, and strongly venting on a person that answers on the other end only frustrates me and probably puts me on a Do call list to annoy.

Funny you should mention extended warranties, I just took delivery of a new Tesla. After reading your post I realized nothing was mentioned about selling me an ext. wty. Strange because new car dealerships really push them.

I had a client that owned a car dealership. He told me that there is not an extended warranty that is worth the money. That is why his salesmen pushed them so hard.
Another thing is fabric protection on furniture. Stores make huge profit on this stuff and it's not different than buying a can of Scotchguard. |

Almost never buy an extended warranty for cars from the original manufacturer. I say almost because specialty and high horsepower vehicles can make sense. I would never buy an extended warranty on a naturally aspirated engine for a common car, like your basic Toyota or Honda or whatnot. I did get the extended warranty on my WRX because it had a turbo. It was a commuter car and not something I raced or ran hard. At 71k miles the turbo failed despite me changing the oil well ahead of the mfg recommended interval(MFG was 6k miles, I was doing it around 3k). I paid $99. The warranty from the dealer was a Subaru warranty and was only about $800. There were a couple other repairs, the major one being the AC condenser. All together, I was around 3k ahead of the game after deductibles and warranty cost. Most of the time however, extended warranties are ADP. Additional dealer profit. |
