My Mom always made me a homemade yellow cake with chocolate icing -
still one of my favorites today.

I was lucky enough to be present for each of my niece's first birthday parties. One my great delights was seeing them eat their first birthday cakes! And get the cake and ice cream all over their little faces LOL.

I still can't get used to seeing my 22 year old niece drinking a beer at family gatherings...it was just yesterday I was pushing her in a stroller and changing her diaper...

And one of my favorite birthday cakes as a child was the pineapple upside down cake when I turned 10. Yummy!

Chocolate with chocolate icing. My mother made the best.

My favorite was Strawberry Shortcake from Ebbinger's Bakery.

I used to make my husband (slim and trim) a four-layer Italian "tiramasu" cake drizzled with rum syrup and filled with raspberry jam and some kind of filling with those candied citrus fruit thingies used at Christmas. Forget what the frosting was. It took all day, and this was back when we had two little boys five years apart who were always running around nipping at each other and my ankles.

Then he quit smoking, gained weight, and he went on the Atkins diet, so carbs were out. He's maintaned the 50-lb weight loss for 30 years, so maybe I should consider making one again. I still have the recipe book... somewhere!

Ferrara's Bakery in Little Italy, New York City does have them.
They also have canoli cakes. We order them both for the holidays....along with the mini chocolate covered canoli.
They arrive frozen.

But nothing beats home made. I used to make regular rum cakes with Baccardi rum.......but never attempt tiramisu. If you find your recipe, I'd appreciate having it. A very delicate flavor, for sure.

I will be able to unpack that box in a few weeks and get you the recipe. The box is buried right now, waiting for some cabinetry to be installed. It's an old book from the '70s.

Maybe I'll make another one for DH!
