Confused by our customs
Trying to understand the symbolism associated with displaying plywood pastel colored bunnies wearing bow ties to celebrate the resurrection of one's Lord and Savior. I guess the answer is...America!

Does anyone remember that old SNL skit with the late Phil Hartman...he was a caveman lawyer who would always be up to something or acting inappropriately with women then say I'm just...a simple cave man....your customs confuse me....

Religious holidays are embellished and added to. Bunnies and chicks are spring symbols. Feasts are associated always with religious holidays and gatherings of families with little ones. Some people feel that bunnies and chicks and candy is contrary to the celebration of the resurrection and some people feel it is an addition of humans doing human things to celebrate. Only God knows.
Me and mine. We do both. Remember why Christ died and celebrate Easter with a good meal and fun things.

If you are driving to Chimayo in northern New Mexico on Good Friday you will see hundreds walking alongside the highway, some carrying crosses on their shoulders and backs. I have seen this several times as I lived in the area for nine years. Thousands Trek To New Mexico Chapel On Good Friday : NPR
This is its history. Apparently it was revived after WWII by New Mexican survivors of the Bataan Death March in The Philippines and their families. The Long Journey of the Pilgrim Child

I love that part of NM (most all of NM for that matter) and have spent countless days just driving around...and exploring the entire state. In fact, one of my all-time favorite drives is through Jemez Springs...and along the Valles Calderra. If I'm ever there on Good Friday, will definitely make it a priority to check out the walkers...and honor their history. |

A lot of our religious customs come from the combining of Judeo/Christian practices/beliefs with Pagan rituals — the Easter egg, Christmas tree, mistletoe, etc. it was the only way to get many pagans to convert to Christianity. So, we get the blessings of God in our religious rejoicing and the fun in those same rejoicings. Sometimes we get lucky. To me, Easter eggs and Christmas trees are in the lucky category.

I'm getting so forgetful I hide the eggs on Saturday night and by Sunday morning I forgot where I put them.

When we were kids our mom once found an egg 6 months later behind the curtain of a stair landing window. Ripe. Very ripe.
