The Sumter reference reminds me of a few times I've seen posts where the developer's name is written Morris instead of Morse or reference is made to Morris Blvd instead of Morse Blvd. I don't know if they're being disrespectful or ignorant. So in that case, I feel they should be corrected, and if somebody else doesn't I will.

I'm not the best typist ether, however, I can edit my posts to fix typos, or re-write what I have typed, but I can't ever go back and re-do what I have spoken. I'm sure we all have said things we wish we could edit.

Oh, Walter....I have a thick enough skin, but not everyone does. Some are a bit intimidated, and that does NOT make them less of a contributor on a public forum. How about, if we can figure out the meaning, we LET IT GO!!

If one absolutely must correct the "p", or another error, just reply, nicely, including the correct spelling, ie....."I also enjoy Lake Sumter Landing". If the mistaken poster doesn't catch it.....oh well....!! Let it go.

First, I'm the last one to correct someone's grammar. I've never done it and never will. Secondly, I don't give a rats behind if someone I DON'T KNOW corrects me. This is a public board, it happens. You've seen how mean some can be on this board and any public board. Maybe I could have left out the "silly thread" part but hey, I'm not perfect, but I stand but the rest of my comment.

I don't think Billethekid's skin is any different than anyone elses. He posts what he believes and I am SURE at times he is hurt and discouraged by some of the responses.

If you can't stand the heat stay out of the kitchen. We all tell ourselves that, but as we age, we become more sure of our views. We also think that people who disagree with us are wrong, and they may be.

Not all people are diplomatic, but diplomacy will change an opinion now and again where bitter nastiness and scathing jabs will not.

you're assigning blame when there is no animosity intended.

I'm always amazed that some people assume the worst in others...there is no way to tell how it is intended unless they specifically say they're trying to be superior or condescending. Perhaps you could read a correction and "assume" they are doing it for the right reasons...I'm sure if you tried you'd find that not everyone who corrects someone else is trying to be superior...

The problem is doing it on a public forum. If someone has a slight handicap or is just a real bad speller, it could be embarrassing to have it pointed out so all can see. As long as you understand what they are trying to say, there is no reason to correct their spelling, especially on an open forum.

Here’s just a little aside and barely off topic since we are talking about language, its intent and spelling; every time I see the word “facetious”, it reminds me that there are only two words in the English language (that I‘m aware of) that have each of the vowels in the order in which they appear. Does anybody know what the other word is?

When I posted last evening I was thinking of "abstemious" as two of you mentioned. In fact, catty, that was your first response before you suggested there were 8. Upon farther investigation, I have to admit that there are 8. Ten if you, as DougB suggested, added “ly” to facetious and abstemious. I actually think that is all.

And, catty, just a quick FYI, occasionally I partake in an abstemious diet. :) The truth also is, that I *do* owe you that “Buffett” that you were attempting to win, because you forced me to think beyond the end of my nose. (And I love the way you spell, BTW). 

As a related aside to the OP, I have a close friend who can hardly spell his own name (that’s a slight exaggeration), yet he is in the upper ranks of one of the largest financial institutions in the nation. In fact, he is the industry’s spokesman and “educator” for the Washington elite who think they know how to run a business better than those who have spent their lives in doing so. In other wurds, spellin’ ain’t the be all to end all.

It is called dyslexia and a lot of smart people have it and don't spell well. There are all kinds of smart people and all kinds of dumb people too.

Some corrections are done diplomatically and some corrections sound cold and unfeeling. There is always a human typing behind every computer. That human might be beginning Alzheimers, or just cussed mean, but he or she thinks they are right.

Some corrections are made to feel superior and some corrections are because people are innate teachers.

I love this forum because although many are anonymous, after reading their posts for awhile you can figure out quite a bit about them.

Just because a person is diplomatic doesn't mean they are nice. And nice people are not always diplomatic.

A good deal of our misunderstandings on this forum are due to ways that people in different parts of the country communicate.

Not fruit flies. A little vinegar in a cup covered in plastic wrap with some small holes punched it the top does a wonderful job.

So even flies have their preference, just like people. I prefer honey with a splash of vinegar to give it a little kick!
