I ask that all reading this, on the next big news story about Islamic extremists watch each and all major news channels for five minutes each for an hour. Subtle, but interesting. Pure journalism is dead on television. Ratings rule. AND the person who said you can watch too much news is right. It begins as valid interest and ends up as brainwashing.

I was so upset a couple of days ago. Too much news watching...but one is no better than the next. Enough of picking out just one. Have you watched that ONE lately for a half an hour? Three times a day? You wouldn't think that one anchor worked for the same network as another anchor. Who needs all that editorializing???? I just want, AND will never have...just the facts.

If you simply tune in one network for news then all you are doing is validating how you feel, and NOT learning anything new.

Also, insure that you supplement this tv watching with reading before you allow that opinion to become hard set in your mind. Nothing is simple any more, at least not as simple as the cable networks want to make it

After reading some posts recently, I might add that if you use google to either learn or validate or whatever, ALSO ADD AN INVESTIGATION OF THAT SOURCE YOU PICK. There are more biased, openly I might add, and "satire" things on the web....read trusted sites even if you do not agree with their spin. If you do not agree and read in detail then still disagree after fact checking, then you are forming an opinion. As I said, things are complicated...not easy to stay informed, BUT IT IS EASY TO BE LED

I think a lot of the problem is that the alphabet networks and the cable news networks now have 24 hours to fill, with talk about "something--inane or substantive--who really cares? Just fill the schedule!".

I try to read/watch media from both sides, and I really enjoy reading/watching these two decidedly liberal, constitutional (and other areas) lawyers. They are not afraid of calling out either side when they act more and more tyrannical.

To me, the focus needs to be on the cancerous trend of growing tyranny instead of liberty.

The writings of these two (in archived columns) are good for news analysis that is objective.

Ok, if you don't see what your kid is doing in school, that's YOUR fault, not the teacher, district or state. Whether you like it or not, digital textbooks and computerized testing is here to stay. I for one, as a teacher, absolutely love the digital textbooks. Students now get real video footage to go with print media that can be viewed outside of class time. I can now focus my energy with the students on synthesizing that information in my classroom. Much more efficient and effective for instruction. I teach a "flipped" classroom and found it the best way yet instruct the students of today. My kids Tweet and post Facebook and Instagram answers in my class.

I agree with you. What I was talking about is beware of the capacity for all the e-textbooks and testing answers to be stored in the cloud, with access only by federal bureaucrats hellbent on imposing p****** ideology.

I was a media specialist in charge of technology before I retired. When I first learned about the Kahn Academy I thought about the same idea. I think you get help from the teacher but you learn on your own. I wondered what would happen if the student watched the math lesson at home and did the homework at school with teachers jumping in to answer question when needed, a teaching moment. Years ago we use to say that the "teacher should not be a sage on the stage but rather a guide at you side".

The most important lesson to teach is how to teach yourself. Your strategy seems just right.

Facebook concerns me. The technology is great but I don't like the privacy factor.

I use to have classes in the library where no talking was allowed only chatting online. It was interesting to see otherwise quiet students being more verbal.

I was against ipads in my district. They may be fine for little ones but I was pushing for chromebooks that cost much less. I lost the argument back then but I think I was just ahead of the curve. And I wanted wi-fi in the library, the cafe and the auditorium only. I like networking the students, teachers and server in the classroom but having the kids online in the classroom is just too tempting a distraction. I like the teacher controlling the content. I also like how chromebooks update themselves and impervious to malware. They also function as e readers, calculators and you can't install games.

I agree that parents need to see what the children are reading and would also like to see the parents read the same books on their chromebooks too. I think the dinner conversation or anytime conversation would be fruitful and engaging.

Let me know if I can help you. Helping teachers was the best part of my job. They are so appreciative and often overwhelmed with the technology because of time constraints caused by writing reports. There were not as many reports back in the day.

Yes, it really makes one think. We are all so fortunate & blessed to live in this country.......but our present reality could be altered in a flash.

Not too many would survive without the common everyday necessities that many take for granted. Our comfort levels would greatly diminish, followed by our quality of life itself.

These books are a definite wake up call. Many of the "doomsday preppers" may seem far out with their underground bunkers, but how long would any of us survive without WATER...........especially in a hot climate. Or, without electricity.

Apparently (I was just informed) our Vermont town would still have water (which is gravity fed from the treatment plant up on the mountain)......so at least we could rehydrate any stock of m.r.e.'s or cook our regular food, bathe, wash clothes, use the toilet, etc.

Obviously, our freezers would lose their electricity.......so that stuff would have to somehow be cooked up quickly on the barbecue grill until the propane ran out...........but we could at least share with our neighbors...........but even with three freezers, that wouldn't last long......................the scary part is for those who are dependent on insulin, or other pharmaceuticals......many of which need to be kept cold...........again, the first book is an eye opener...........can't wait to read the second.

I always keep a full pantry; especially during the winter........so canned goods would be a Godsend.......but many things such as pasta need water to prepare..........rice needs water......etc. Soups are a good mainstay to insure survival. Beans, lentils, etc.

(The supermarket shelves would be stripped clean in days; those prepared will survive......those who scoffed at stocking up on water, food, necessities, TOILET PAPER.......well, they will be at the mercy of others as the government will not be able to help all....or even some.)

For two days in a row, we had the deer family (mother & two little ones) "grazing" under the snow in the location where the apple blossom tree used to be..........memory I guess. Sad to think that they might have to be food "if" it ever happened.........this morning they were here at 5 a.m.

Thought provoking, for sure. Great minds think alike ! Let's hope it never ever ever occurs........but with crazy foreign dictator types, one never truly knows.

Also, you guys out there might realize that your MODERN CARS will NOT operate.........anything computerized will be zapped by an electro magnetic pulse aimed at our nation.........so all of the "hippy types" who kept their old clunkers.....will be cruising around in vans or cars or trucks from the 1970's. Everyone else will be walking......or riding their horses into town.

Anyway, two great books for sure..........just to increase awareness.
