Do You Love Your Mattress?
When we finally move into our villa, we'll need mattresses. I'm getting confused at the variety of new mattresses that are available these days, and I hope one of you helpful folks has some advice for me.
The standard mattresses all seem to begin with the letter "S": Sealy, Simmons, Serta, and Springair. There's also the Tempurpedic, the adjustabed, the sleep number bed, horsehair mattresses, and others I don't know anything about. Do you love your mattress? Would you recommend your mattress to everybody you meet? Thanks in advance for any advice! PS: I like a very firm mattress. The last mattress we bought was the "bowling ball" mattress. It's the one where you can drop a bowling ball on one side and the wine glasses on the other side don't spill. Don't believe it. I think that trick only works before they put the cover over the springs. It also has a pillowtop that is way too soft for me. I wouldn't buy that mattress again.

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Hi uuj,
I love my Sleep Number. The Sleep Number can be all things. In the store they said to find my Sleep Number and stick with it. Well, I don't. I change it from time to time. If you are thinking about a Sleep Number, it is a good idea to go to a store and try one out. But please promise me that you will not tell anyone at the Sleep Number store that I change my Sleep Number all the time. I fear they may come and take my Sleep Number mattress away if they find out. They were pretty into telling me NOT to change the number once I found it. Mr. Boomer never changes his Sleep Number for his side. That is because Mr. Boomer could sleep anywhere on anything. And you, uu, sound like you are a 100. And probably a 100 you will always be. I, on the other hand, am a 35 on some nights. Then maybe a 55. Or a 75 or 80. And even a 100. Or a 25. But please do not tell those people at the Sleep Number store. OK. Boomer Sybil

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Part II
Hi again uuj, I got so carried away in my above post, talking about changing my Sleep Number all the time, that I did not answer that question about whether I would recommend a Sleep Number to everybody. The answer is an unequivocal and resounding, "Yes." In fact, I often go on and on about my Sleep Number, as you can tell. So far I have managed to influence 4 relatives, 2 friends, and my lawyer to buy a Sleep Number. I should probably work for Sleep Number. But they probably would not let me because I would be telling people all the time that they could just go ahead and change their Sleep Numbers whenever they feel like it. You know, I just realized that it is well past Midnight in the Garden of Boomer BeBack. And I know all too well that I should never be permitted to type after midnight because I do things like go on and on about my Sleep Number or make shameless confessions. Goodnight. Boomer, feeling like 35 tonight

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Boomer,
We have a sleep number bed also, and I've never been wild about it. Ours is pretty old (10), and back then they didn't call it a sleep number, was just called a Select Comfort. I can always see where that piece in the middle is when it's made up, it's higher. Maybe they improved em when they started calling them sleep number beds...

Quote:
I will have to check later to see if there is anything in the middle, but I don't think so. Mr. Boomer is still snoozing away so I will wait to start poking around. Actually, Mr. Boomer is the one who makes our bed. This routine started when we were first married. It seems that he does a much better job at bed making than I do and he does it every single day. Uncle Sam taught him how and that's how it gets done. Perfectly. It seems that I could never quite get it right. So far we have never had an inspection of our barracks or whatever, but I guess it could happen. This Army days carryover is only about the making of the bed. Mr. Boomer's desk is a disaster. But come to think of it, our grass always looks really nice and is mowed perfectly. I also do not know how to use the mower. I have found that to make the made bed look its best, I can pump both sides up to 100. I only do that when I know company is coming and somebody might want to see the work we have done throughout this house. So we go into tour mode. Everybody knows how that one goes. But on an everyday basis, I think the bed has nothing sticking up in the middle. I will report later. Boomer

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Judy,
I particularly like the new commercial where the lady pats the mattress and says "Aww, come up here ONE". I thought that might be the one for you, EweJudy!

We have Tempurpedic and love it. A little pricey but to us worth it.

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
Here's my report back to Mint about whether or not the newer version of the Sleep Number has that thing sticking up in the middle. And about some other stuff, too. I am posting and I can't shut up this morning.
The thing in the middle does not seem to be a problem. Ours has a pretty good amount of padding on the top. It's not the one with the most padding. I think it's next to that one. That may be the difference. I don't know if the older ones had all the various choices of padding. But I poked around and did not find much of anything. One of the people I influenced said that if she ever gets another one, she wants one with less padding so she experiences the whole air mattress thing better. She likes hers a lot, but thinks she could have saved some money on doing without the additional padding and liked it even better. When I use a really low number, my side can end up looking like a hammock though. The marketing on these things is something to behold. The website lets you figure out a bunch of stuff, including price. I had always thought they were a lot more expensive than other mattresses. But I found that not to be the case. At least not with what I was looking at in the sheep's store. And I sure would never buy one from just the website, without going to the store to try it out in person. I am sure that many people hate the Sleep Number very much. I think they do have a 30-day trial or something like that. Of course, it's all about conversation and opinion and finally a decision. Just like so many other things. Good luck. Boomer Goldilocks

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
This is just my opinion but I had one of the worst nights sleep on a sleep number bed. I check into a Raddison Hotel for a 5 nite stay which features and advertises these type beds in their hotels worldwide. I tried each level and could not find anything comfortable so I checked out the next morning and moved to a Crown Plaza which in my opinion has the best sleep system. I have also stayed at Westin Hotels and they too have a very good mattress. Westin Hotel has branded their sleep system and it is available at many mattress stores.

Wow! What a wealth of information you folks are! Thank ewe soooo much!
We're off to check out mattresses today. All the bedding stores are located in a city south of us, so we'll be gone most of the day. I'll report back late tonight. A big THANK YOU to all!

Re: Do You Love Your Mattress?
We've stayed at several Marriott's which have Tempurdic's. I hate them, Wife loves them. The reason I hate them is that the foam forms around you and "captures" you. I roam and roll around at night and fight the foam, plus I think it is hot. Maybe that's the reasons she likes it??? I'm afraid to ask her
