It is a very well known scam

Payment with a Certified Check is usually very easy to confirm and much different than payment with a "Bank Check". If you'll note the OP's original post, he's not using clear language for what he's been promised.

Depending on what bank issued the check, some "bank checks" are easy to confirm.

There isn't always a boogey man.

This is a well known scam for years now. The exact thing happened to me. This check looks very legit but does not clear right away. It’s a scam

If you do find a legit buyer, this is a safe way to confirm that the money is in your account before releasing it.

Sell Your Used Car Privately | PrivateAuto

The problem is that the money is in your account. The bank is required to place the money into your account when you present them with a check. However, when the bank discovers that the check is a counterfeit, they can remove the money from your account. The scammer is depending on you to not understand how certified checks are processed. Do not accept a certified check as payment if the check is from an out-of-town bank.

Is there any possibility that this could be a scam?

Ask them for a money order or cashiers check (both as good as cash)....see how they respond

They use this ploy with just about any product, furniture car etc. would you buy any automobile without seeing it?

Money orders and cashiers checks are not as good as cash. Both can be counterfeited, just like certified checks. Even cash can be counterfeited, but it is not as easy to do.

LonnyP 12-05-2023 08:30 AM

Scam. Block them.

Pegasusprt 12-05-2023 08:45 AM

Here's how it works. The car is $1000, the check will be for $3000. Cash the check and pay the shipper $2000 cash. You are out a car and $3000.

Ask for a copy of their driver's license. Talk with your bank about process of clearing.

Sparky1959 12-05-2023 09:11 AM

What kind of car are you selling ? And how much ? Better yet can you send me the URL from your post ? I’ve been looking for a used car for awhile now …

Depending on the bank listed on the check you can verify if it is real with that actual bank, if it is not a real bank then it is obviously fake.

Because this is one of the oldest scams out there.
