Makes great hockey pucks. Never met anyone I disliked enough to regift them a fruitcake.

Depends, homemade can be really a good cake.

Processed fruit cake can have up to a ten year or more expiration date

I always make my own fruit cakes, based on the recipe my mother taught me. In fact, I just baked four of them this week. I love 'em. One is a gift for my mother-in-law who also loves 'em. That said, I've never tasted a store-bought fruit cake that I thought was any good. Fruit cakes vary so much that it may boil down to what you were raised with.
