If you soak the fruitcake in some nice hard stuff it enhances the fruit.

Have not actually had much of this. Kind of a benefit of being for the most part a loner. My neighbor brought over a Panettone which looks like a fruit cake but the last one I had was OK even if it took me a very long time to eat it.
