If you wait until dark then you only have to worry about vampires!

They seem to like the exhaust fumes. That's why they are especially bad on the highways. The coastal areas of Florida don't have lovebugs for some reason.

They are transplanted Texans.

Thanks for the link. Actually, according to it, they are transplanted from South American to Texas in the 1940's and have spread along the Gulf Coast since then. With bee populations dwindling maybe we need these for pollination.
Maybe we should love the lovebugs instead of hating them!

They have taken over the front of my house! Can't use the front door as these bugs are all over the door and even crawling in some how. It is weired as the houses across the street do no have any swarming bugs. Seems just my house and the one next door to me. It was never this bad this past spring for us. Since my hubby doesn't get home from work until after dusk he pooh poohs me as being too dramatic. He is home tomorrow and he will see for himself how bad they are. They are even having a mass group lovein in the the corners of my windows! YUKKKKKK!

They are all over my front door as well - all I can say at this point is I sure am glad I am not a female love bug. Geez!

Does your front entrance provide more shade than your neighbors across the street? If so, that may be why you are seeing more of them. The spring love bug season is usually lighter than the fall season and last year seemed to be especially light.

At least the females don't have to fly backwards.

I spray my lawn with raid at sundown, it seems to work... they hide in the lawn at night.

Hmmm

I wondered where they went at night. If I sprayed with Raid, I need a pallet of it since we have a big corner lot. Good idea though. I may spray some home defense up near the foundation to see if that works.

Skybo 09-13-2012 06:46 PM

Jeez folks! No matter how grossed out you are with love bugs, there is no reason to friggen napalm them...much less your yard. Spraying RAID on your grass???? Love bugs don't bite, sting, or carry disease. They come twice a year and they serve an ecological purpose.

Timing is Everything!

Just our luck that the Love Bugs's arrived just as we have our lanai screens removed and our lanai and pool deck painted. We now have loads of dead LB's on the lanai and deck along with quite a few both dead and alive that got inside the house through the nooks and cranies of the two sliding glass doors in our LR and BR. Timing couldn't have been any better. No real problem though, we just told them they had to provide and prepare their own meals and tend to their own fallen comrads, and they're cool with that!

And if you just paint over the lovebugs it'll give you that nice textured look! No extra charge. :1rotfl:

They came within an hour of the painting being completed. I'm not paying for another coat and they're not evenly scattered if we would. Even if they were, we already have texture and... they would forever BUG us if we did! :D
