Re: Fads
Donna, love your posts. They are so creative.
Back on topic, how about "potsy" - in the Bronx, we played it on the sidewalk and used our keys throwing them into the boxes and then jump on one foot and pick up the keys and jump back on one foot to home place. I think that was the name? Johnny M might remember cause he was from the Bronx too. Another one is riding your bikes or roller skates on a closed street called, "A Play Street" that kept cars out so kids could play..... Please forgive me, these are big city activities where there weren't any playgrounds or formalized activities. Kathie  |
Re: Fads
Guess you're talking about hopscotch, Kathie? We used the chains that held the little coin purses that you squeezed to open (another fad/era thing?).
Okay, fad drinks/food: RC or Coca-Cola (no Pepsi, EVER) with peanuts in them. French fries with mayo (yuck!). Moon pies and RC. Egg creams. Real soda jerks making chocolate sodas (yummmmmmm). Wax Coke bottles. Candy cigarettes. Candy straws (thank goodness those are still around and still yummy). (Yeah, I know, not faddish, just nostalgic.) |
Re: Fads
"Potsy" sounds similar to Hopscotch -
|
Re: Fads
Remember the chains made out of gum wrappers..
Coke in bottles..http://www.millan.net/minimations/sm...cokesmiley.gif Penny Candy..http://www.millan.net/minimations/sm...ipopsmiley.gif The milk man would deliver milk, eggs, butter.. The foil Christmas Trees...http://www.millan.net/minimations/smileys/julegran.gif Then of course the GREAT TV shows.. |
Re: Fads
I think your right, the formal name probably was Hopscotch but we called it potsy (remember Potsy on happy days?)
Thanks for the info. |
Re: Fads
Had the longest gum chain in the neighborhood - can't remembe how to make them though...A lost art...what ashame...
Along with the foil Christmas tree came the color wheel that shined on it... We actually lived across the street from a cow farm and would get quart bottles of milk from them that still had the cream on top because it wasn't pasturized or homoginized (can't remember which)... |
Re: Fads
Yes Kathie it was Potsy or Pottsy. Mostly the girls played and the guy's watched. You drew boxes with numbers 1 - 9 I think. They used chalk (too expensive at times) so they used soap or just the side of a big rock. You threw you keys or a stick or rock onto a number and then had to hop without hitting a line pick up the item and hop back again without losing your balance. Some called it Hopscotch. How about bouncing the Spalding ball under your legs while singing a song? Johnny

Re: Fads
OMG, almost forgot small portable radios. Held them up to our ears and walked around the neighborhood beebopping along. Cool man!
|
Re: Fads
There was a particular song that stands out that we used when bouncing the ball under our leg - I remember it had something to do with the alphabet...
Didn't have a lot of concrete (grew up in a very rural area) so we had to draw our hopscotch in the dirt...lines got buried alot... This is fun... |
Re: Fads
Bella,
Was it the song about"my name is Anna and I come from Alabama with a car load of apples." Then you would go on to the b's and all thru the alphabet???? Did anyone mention Double dutch jumprope where you use 2 jumpropes going at the same time in opposite directions? |
Re: Fads
Sorry, I see double dutch was mentioned, another senior moment. sigh!
|
Re: Fads
Nonie,
What a memory - that's the song... |
Re: Fads

(not sure about the spelling )and what about Stoop Ball |
Re: Fads
Nonie, great memory, Kid. But I remembered it too, can't believe that and after the surgery I had... good for me...
Now, does anybody rememberrrrrrr bouncing the spaulding, singing "A my name is Anna and I come from Alabama and with us we bring apples," and thennnnnnn crossing your leg over the ball (there was a name for that action and I can't remember it) ....and as you sang on by the time you got to L's, you had to be able to jump up in the air and double cross your legs over the ball. Gosh, today, I'd fall flat on my tush!! JohnnyM, you've got the game of Pottsy perfect. I remember it all too well. Yes, chalk too expensive, we used stones... ha, ha ha, ha I love this thread!!! Kathie  |
Re: Fads
Kathie, it sounds like you would have to be a contorshinist (sp?) to do that bouncing ball trick. Gosh we were never that advanced!!!Also Reds Hula Hoop trick I was amazed reading her post. You girls were really tricky ! LOL
You should have been on Ted Mac's amature hour.(remember him?) |
Re: Fads
Nonie, Of course I remember babushkas. They were tied in front under the our chins, of course! Will try to find a picture and post.

Re: Fads

Re: Fads
How about the big black velvet bow stuck right up in front of our huge boufant hairdoo!
OMG I cant stop!!! 040 |
Re: Fads
My husband said to me today "I wonder ..." and I replied "Don't wander too far, you might get lost". That was one of the stupid high school expressions I used when I was 14; I could not believe it actually came out of my mouth!
Or when someone asked us to do something, we would cleverly reply: "Who was your servant last year?" Anyone else remember the stupid high school expressions they used? |
Re: Fads
See ya later alligator, after while crocodile! Later Gator!
oh how corney we were. |
Re: Fads
Yeeeks! I still say Later Gator, especially since we moved here! Here's an old expression used on the guys or snotty girls when they were staring at you "Take a picture, it lasts longer." I'm sure we've all used that one. I'm still with ya on the busbuska's Nonie. On chin or between the lower lip and chin. Lol ;D

Re: Fads
Bungalow Bar Ice cream truck, The Good Humor Man, Hear a knock on your door and it's the Dugan man selling doughnuts and cake. The beungalene man (Sp?) for the clothes washer. Bottles of milk at the front door in the am and of course the Italian Ice Cart man scraping the ice into a little pointed cardboard cup. How, oh how did we survive taking swigs from our best friends soda bottle....we never got sick. Johnny
|
Re: Fads
OMG..I just remembered the Fuller Brush Man..He was a real pest..LOL

Re: Fads
Coal and ice deliveries.
Rag man's horse wagon going down the alley. Working in the bowling alley loading the pin machine by hand. Grand mother's phone number in Indiana was two longs and a short on party line. Phone numbers starting with words instead of numbers. Magickist Carpet, the Kiss of Beauty Hudson 3-2700. Stanley Home Products (like Fuller Brush) (and Jewel Tea Home Delivery) Egg deliveries to your house Welcome Wagon when you moved to a new town Tuesday 1 PM air raid warning practices and you had to get under your school desk(all the cars had to stop, too) |
Re: Fads
Nonie, Nope, my babushka was tired under my chin. Do you remember telephone exchanges such as Bittersweet 8-0000 or Wellington 5-0000. Do you remember the Omar man coming to the house with all sorts of good bake goods.

Re: Fads
Nonie, Do you remember Riverview, The Bobs, Parachute Jump, Mil d Floss, Greyhound etc.?
|
Re: Fads
Avista, how could I forget Riverview? Of course, I was so sorry to see it torn down, we had such fun there. Thankyou for bringing that up! Apologize to all who arent from Illinois. Riverview was a huge amusement park right smak dab in the middle of Chicago with some very scarey rides and rollercoasters.
Any other Illinois people have some Riverview experiences they can share? |
Re: Fads
Chuck, those were great! and really brought back some memories.
Those air raid drills were really a pain. I do remember crawling under my desk. How funny as if that would help us in an actual air raid!! Chuck, off topic for a seconed, are you still interested in that slow and easy bike ride, Im drumming up some interest. |

You bet - slow and easy for me and the misses (we will be staying all next winter - one more year of working for me)(unless the market takes a huge dump) Do you remember 2 cent days at Riverview - admission and all rides were 2 cents! Here's their website (!): http://www.riverviewparkchicago.com/ I bought a tee shirt from there last year. |
Re: Fads
Chuck,
Thankyou so much for this website. its incredible! Where in the world did you find this? Thanyou, thankyou, thankyou, I know there are a few people out there that are really going to have fun with it. ;D |
Re: Fads
Gosh! Riverview! I loved it! Our neighbor and my sitter at times used to take her two daughters and I and we'd beg her to take us in the Tunnel of Love. And then we'd all make loud kissing sounds just to be brats and I'm sure all the teenagers loved that! lol
Also, beside the rag man with the horse and cart, we had a man that would come to the door to sharpen knives! And can anyone forget the Encyclopedia Salesman sitting in your living room. My parents actually fell for that one. Made time payments. Encyclopedia Britanica. |
Re: Fads
Chels,
I was hoping you would see the riverview post. Isnt it great!!! your parents obviously wanted you to be well educated , did you use those encyclopedias? |
Re: Fads
That Riverview Post was fantastic! What fun it was to explore the site.

Isn't google the greatest thing since sliced bread! Like I mentioned earlier - I bought a tee shirt from the site and often proudly wear it around TV and get more comments than I get from my "Where the Heck is Wall Drug" shirt. (also bought after a google search) |
