Gov. Christie exercised very poor judgement with this decision.

Whitney sang the most rousing rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner ever but that does equal the loss of life for people who have lost their lives defending our country and our way of life.

Not sure if this has anything to do with defending our country.It is about her funeral and not military. She had many mental issues,and many problems. Sometimes you have to understand that people have problems. I am not judging.

Flags should be lowered for military heroes and political figures that are not disgraceful. I guess that pretty much narrows it down to military heroes.

Flags are lowered for military funerals and some in goverment office.The act of her state lowerering the flag for her funeral angers many .Not here,few days this will be history.

paulandjean: I agree with you. I don't understand why this seems to upset so many. Do the complainers really believe that none of the others for whom the flag has been lowered had any personal faults? At the 1991 Super Bowl Whitney Houston sang what most regard as the most stirring rendition of our National Anthem, ever. In my book that alone should earn her this special honor. Does the American flag not belong to ALL American citizens?

The flag should be lowered for EVERYONE! In fact, why don't we just keep it lowered. I mean, it's not like we have a criteria.

I certainly hope they lower it for me when I die. Sure, why not? I sang in that Karaoke bar last week!

Lowering the flag does not honor her as much as it dishonors the people who lowering the flag is meant for.

The Governor of NJ said she is a cultural icon.

I am not a fan of Gov. Christie, but he has clearly articulated his criteria for lowering the US Flag (not the state flag) at government buildings. He is not suggesting that individuals do so. His entire statement is found at :

So for everyone who says "why not fallen soldiers".... He did it for soldiers, and police and firemen, and other musicians. He lowers the flag for the public contribution of the deceased, not the private troubles. He does not ask if the fallen cop was "crack addict" or an alcoholic, or made some poor life choices, they are honored for what they did for New Jersey. And I'm sorry to say that I suspect an element of racial animus in all these angry responses.
