I play along with them usually they are from India/Philippines/Nigeria, they end up frustrated and hang up. Time ranges from 5-7 minutes depending on the Country.

Call it " Payback " as opposed to " PayPal. I win every time. Lately though the calls have been less frequent hmmmm I wonder why ?

Reminds me of the call I received about a year or so ago from a supposed Microsoft rep. Fella had an Indian accent and was telling me my computer had sent error messages to Microsoft and he was going fix the issue(s) if I could give him access. I broke out laughing telling him he was trying to scam me. He played the "I'm insulted" card. The conversation didn't last very long.

Why not just withdraw the money from your PP account. This sort of thing happened to me several years ago. PP was worthless in dealing with it then as they seem to be now. Believe you should assume your account has been compromised and change your password. .

I messaged PayPal and they said it was out of their hands. Yesterday, I finally got an email from someone that was odd. Nothing in subject line and no signature. It just said to return the money which I want to do but am still wary about this. I emailed back and asked for a phone number but have not received an answer. Should I just send it back (not sure how)? Who would leave their rent money in someone else’s account and not answer texts or emails. Just very strange to me.
Thanks

My recommendation would be to Close your PayPal account and Stop communication with anyone other than PayPal on the matter.

You can’t close an account with a balance.

Have you thought about withdrawal of all your funds from the account and then closing your account. You could keep the money that was incorrectly credited to you in abeyance in the event that a proper path of return is determined. Also, keep and document all correspondence concerning this issue in the event it is necessary to defend yourself in the future.

I told them that I wanted to call Microsoft to verify. They told me "don't call Microsoft, they won't answer the call!"
That's when I knew it was a scam!
😱

Ironically, that may have been the only true thing they told you.
