Even if you could get an update, that salesman talk "free" update will probably cost you money and never be as good as google maps. We have a 2017 CRV with android auto and apple car play. Have used google maps with both and it is excellent on the display and audio through the car. We had the same costly nav. update problem with a Toyota. No need to ever buy nav. in a car.

Our 2017 Honda CR-V has a Garmin navigation system built-in. I've been able to update it 3 or 4 times in the 18 months we've had it. It's not 100% current but it's pretty close and the built-in traffic information has saved our butts a few times. We far prefer it over Google Maps but that may just be because we're used to Garmin's interface having owned several of them in the past. To each his own, I guess. I was sold this system as having lifetime free updates and if they never released any, I would be quite unhappy.

I won a 2017 Ford Explorer with an installed Ford navigation system. Like the person that started this conversation I have been unable to update the installed maps. The answer for all of us likely lies in Ford's 2018 line of vehicles. They do not include a Ford installed navigation system. Ford now advertises using Waze.

My Silverado works with Android Auto app and displays it on the trucks nav center. Using google maps is always up to date.
