Not to mention the fact that if someone is really intent on committing a Home Invasion robbery, are they not going to try the dozen or so windows or patio door to get in?

I aspire to be you, VT.

If any thieves are familiar with the area, they might know that the back doors in my neighborhood only have a simple knob lock. A medium shoulder push would probably do it.

I've been meaning to get that strengthened, but the years somehow go by!

My thinking, if they can get to the president... nevertheless, why make your home inviting? I have heard that using a fire extinguisher can be easier than a gun and you can have one in each room too.

First thing have a dead bolt. Nothing will stop a determined bad guy but may slow him down so you can maybe wack him with your 5 iron. If you have a dead bolt make sure the plate that receives the bolt has screws long enough that they go into the house framing 2x4.
Best home defense weapon is a 12 gauge pump short barrel shotgun loaded with shot and not slugs. Keep the safety on and no shell in the chamber. When needed, safety off, dry fire and pump a shell into the chamber. This is safer than a hand gun because if a kid gets a hold of it it is harder to fire it and easier for you to hit your target. Also with deer slugs or hand guns you are shooting up the whole neighborhood the way our houses are built on top of each other.
Just remember that when you touch of a gun in the house you will not be able to hear anything for a while. It is not like in the movies.
Another good home defense weapon is a very bright flashlight. When shined into someones eyes they have night blindness for a short while.

First round in the shotgun should be birdshot, won't penetrate walls easily , after that 00 buckshot. For handgun ammo use Hollow points.....
