Gas prices don't make sense to me !!
Why is it that during my entire life the price of a gallon of gas always ends with a nine tenths price. Wouldn't it make more sense to have prices in even cents ? Like $3.34 or $3.78 maybe $3.00 ???

Without turning this in anything Political. How about half the prices you mentioned without the B.S. nine-tenths? After all the effort and bread the tax dollars we have spent and the sacrifices children and wives and husbands of those who serve our nation have made and the Soldiers who gave all or were scarred and wounded shouldn't our country get a break at the pump? I like the way you think refeik!

It is a marketing ploy. A huge part of the price of gasoline goes to taxes.

Captive/addicted audience.....pricing does not have to make sense to anybody....they know we will pay no matter how much!!!
I do not pay attention to price....do not price shop gasoline....or brand.....gas is gas.... |

The percentage shown for partial cents..ie. 5.00.99 as an example goes way back to the 30's and 40's and it was marketing and just stuck. |

They are the closest stations to the airport for people topping off their rental cars before returning and you'll probably miss the small sign on the ground...that shows an astounding (ripoff) per gallon price! Gas Station Ripoff Quote:
For those in-the-know, there's a WaWa's just a little further north (west side of Semoran Blvd)...that charges about one-half. Something good to pass on to any of your visitors...who are flying in/out of MCO. |

IMO chevron is the best gas, when I was young and wanted to get the most HP out of my HP440 115 octane airplane gas done the trick. IMO unless you have high preformance vehicles regular does just fine.

Spot on - - octane is the major difference between various levels of gasoline. 249.9 is simply a smart marketing tool. Price is difficult to understand. A few years ago we lived less that 50 miles from a refinery, However, the same gas from that refinery was cheaper 175 miles away. Go figure.

Back to the OPs question "Why 9/10" or .9. Long history, but gas was much cheaper when it started. So it was marketing. Government participated with their taxes in tenths. Infrastructure, pumps, signs etc all in place. To change would cost money and serve no interest to the industry. Probably same reason we still use pennies. There used to be penny items. Can't think of any thing a penny can buy today. Perhaps a penny for your thoughts.

I believe we are currently paying about 55 cents per gallon in state and federal taxes. This translates to about 23% of the price of gas. While I am not sure that qualifies as "huge", it certainly is a "significant" portion of the price.
