brp has an interactive map online
i stopped in boone and started / ended trip in cherokee nc which is home to the cherokee nation. They have a casino and great show about their heritage. Visited in town their memorial park for veterans including a medal of honor winner who sacrificed his life at 18 years old to protect his squad
grandfather mountain was another great spot where tom hanks ran in forrest gump. Sign says so. You can stand on a perfect safe 1 mile high swinging bridge there. Smokey mountains were used as the backdrop for last of the mohicans.
Linn cove viaduct is spectacular. Mountain tunnels are always dark so keep your headlights always on. You will make stops at scenic overviews that will overwhelm you and take hundreds of pics. At some points it seems as you ascend the mountains you are driving into the sky itself. I suggest you watch the dozens of youtube videos and make a list. For me its not a road trip but rather a pilgrimage into " purple mountains majesty above the fruited sky"
do not let a clock be your master.
Happy trails.

I have not done a good job asking the question that I presented in the opening post. I guess I wasn't clear or something. I'm out! My bad. I should have known better. Live and learn.

Unless you have driven the road the entire length like we just did then I can't see how anyone could really help out and give a good answer to the concern I was asking about.

I have more miles in reverse than most people have going forward. Don't ask why. I'll figure this out myself.

Been taking 301 for 15 years. Current vehicle has adaptive cruise control that maintains the same speed as the vehicle in front of you. I lock on to a trucker and sit back. The 301 loop north of 10 to 95 works well. Stop at Callahan on 301 and not in the I10area for gas and fast food.
