Exclamation Hawaii volcano shoots lava into sky.

Hawaii volcano shoots lava into sky; evacuations ordered

Quote:
Hawaii's Kilauea volcano erupted Thursday, sending lava shooting into the air in a residential neighborhood and prompting mandatory evacuation orders for nearby homes.

Hawaii County said steam and lava poured out of a crack in Leilani Estates, which is near the town of Pahoa on the Big Island.
I have a friend who is currently on the Big Island vacationing and playing golf, but since he's basically on the other side of the island (Kailua-Kona area)...hopefully he will not have any issues.

I read that they had many earthquakes prior to the eruption. Very unstable area right now.

Wow. If it’s not sinkholes, it’s lava. I guess every place has its challenges.

That's good news.

It doesn't sound like it's getting any better though.

What is sulfur dioxide? Residents warned of exposure after Hawaii volcano eruption - CBS News
Quote:

Hawaii's most active volcano, Kilauea, is erupting with a fury, and dangerous levels of sulfur dioxide gas are being reported. Molten lava and ash were thrown hundreds of feet into the air and onto the streets of the mountainside community near Hilo, and residents under a mandatory evacuation tried to outrun the volcano's flow.

The eruption started after hundreds of small quakes hit the area earlier in the week. Residents began documenting the growing cracks on the streets in front of their house.

A magnitude 5.4 earthquake hit on Thursday and the volcano began to erupt shortly after that. Lava could be seen bubbling up on the streets in the community of Leilani Estates, 25 miles east of the volcano. Drone footage showed two houses on fire and a red line of lava snaking through trees several miles away.

Residents on the Big Island are now being warned about the exposure to high levels of sulfur dioxide from the lava, a gas that can cause intense coughing and burning throats. Volcano expert Paul Davis says the gas occurs during the melting process.

Hope it stays that way for you.

Although I've since come to appreciate Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park...I'll never forget my first flight from Oahu to the Big Island.

We were mostly in the clouds going over and as we broke through the bottom of them to land, our first peek outside the window...looked like a moonscape!

Thinking back, I believe the pilot had a script because you could hear the audible gasp of the passengers who had become used to the lushness of the vegetation and beautiful beaches on Oahu...and are now looking at basically nothing but cooled lava and a barren volcanic landscape.

His comment included... "the stark beauty of the lava fields."

Great marketing!

It looks like things are still active.

It's getting worse.

Hawaii volcano destroys 21 homes, spews lava 200 feet in air
Quote:

The number of homes destroyed by Hawaii's Kilauea volcano jumped to 21 Sunday as scientists reported lava spewing more than 200 feet (61 meters) into the air.

Some of the more than 1,700 people who evacuated prepared for the possibility they may not return for quite some time.

Hawaii officials said the decimated homes were in the Leilani Estates subdivision, where molten rock, toxic gas and steam have been bursting through openings in the ground created by the volcano. Officials updated the number of lost homes after an aerial survey of the subdivision.

"That number could change," Hawaii County spokeswoman Janet Snyder said. "This is heartbreaking."

As of this morning, 26 homes, and incredible photos (from a drone?) showing red hot lava flowing through the housing development.

Any updates from the people in Hawaii? I know that the pictures look terrible but I also know that the media has a way to make it look much worse.

Hard to make the evacuation of more than 1,800 people and dozens of homes & vehicles destroyed...much worse.

Yes very bad for the people involved but how big an area is this affecting and is it affecting any of the other islands? When we had the hurricane last year my friends up north thought the whole state was being blown away. Even the keys were not as badly affected as the media made it seem. Puerto Rico however was spot on.
