There is still time to contact your senator as this vote won't be taken until after the two-week Easter recess. The assault weapons ban can still be added as an amendment.

It "could" be added but it won't get close to the required 60 votes so it's done...

That's all the more reason why all 100 senators must stand up and vote and let their vote become part of the congressional record.

As usual, our elected representatives let us down again and bowed to the powerful lobby group. It looks like the party of NO strikes again!!!!!

Interesting Civil Discourse meeting. The speaker said he would accept expanded background checks. However he believed that the 2nd amendment meant that citizens have the right to possession of any arms including nuclear weapons! Only way to defend his home should the US military come after him was to have equal firepower. My point is that even those who have extreme views of arms can support background checks. Yet the NRA opposes it.

WASHINGTON -- In May of 1999, under intense pressure following the Columbine High School massacre, National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre told Congress that the gun lobby supported instant background checks at gun shows. On Wednesday, back before the Senate Judiciary Committee following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, LaPierre uncomfortably withdrew his support for universal background checks.

LaPierre seemed a bit flustered this week under questioning by the senators for good reason. The NRA's earlier support for instant background checks was not just a line that LaPierre read to the Judiciary Committee 14 years ago. It was part of an advertising and public relations campaign that the NRA organized following the Columbine massacre to show it was sympathetic to changing gun laws, according to documents and interviews by The Huffington Post.

what watered down the bill is the fact that there just are not enough congressmen who are willing to risk an election.

Politics pure and simple.....and how convenient these kinds of bills flounder around until the heat of the moment goes out of the subject.

Just recount or go back and see what politicians said what days after the shooting....and ask where are they now?

Politics a career for those without conscience.

The Second Amendment allows all citizens the right to keep and bear arms. Do you know that the Japanese did not invade mainland US in the '40s because one of their officers studied in the US and warned that there were many Americans with rifles and they would have no chance.

If the people do not want the right to bear arms of all kinds and all people, the Constitution can be amended. That is the way to go.

And losing four fleet carriers at Midway kinda gave them a hint of things to come.

I respectfully disagree with your "spin" regarding the Japanese invasion of the West Coast, however, the assault weapons ban would never pass the House---regardless of the vote of the Senate. So.......the Senate vote makes little or no difference IMHO.

The "assault weapons" ban was nothing more than a cosmetic, feel good piece of legislation. These weapons were less dangerous than many hunting weapons which were allowed. This was a shameful piece of grandstanding by Sen. Feinstein who knew full well that this bill accomplished nothing.
