Default Mah-jongg and Men

What's with men in TVland not playing Mah-jongg? Hubby, (who btw is a 'manly man') and I just finished classes at the Learning College. Now all we see are women players?? Why don't more men play??

Not sure of that answer, but more play now than several years ago. You could start a couples group if he doesn't want to play at rec center. I am a third generation player and had an online Mah Jongg Business. I couldn't get my own husband to play.
I did sell sets to couples, but not nearly as many as I sold to women. I can tell you all ages loves this game, not just seniors.

Of course mostly men play MJ in China. They play big stakes.

Perhaps in China it is a man's game, but here in the USA it has traditionally been played by the bubbies while the altekakers played chess, poker, or smoked a cigar.

I remember as a kid in the early 60's in The Bronx at the Castle Hill pool all the
Mah-Jongg players were exclusively women. I guess things haven't changed much.

Default Misunderstanding

Have the greatest respect for the game...it is just not something that i am interested in. I love pinochle, hearts and spades. Like Bridge it is just too sophisticated a game that I want to play. It requires more concentration and less socialization than I am willing to contribute. As I see it is heads and shoulders above most games but a bit too demanding.

I agree, less socialization...that is why I'm surprised that it isn't more of a 'man's game' than woman's game.

I have played MJ over the years, always annoyed the women, I would sit in for a missing player, and typically win........
I may need to look up the MJ players here. I have my own set.

Perhaps because Mah Jongg takes a lot of patience??

Let's think about this……

A bunch of buds are out together doing what many of us do in TV, playing golf, softball, pickle ball, water volleyball, billiards, archery, bike ride, hunt alligators, or maybe even having a beer…..(you get the picture).

One of us says "Hey guys, I got a great idea, why don't we get together at my house on Wednesday to play……. Mah-Jonng?

After an awkward period of silence another one of says " Uhh, or we could get together at my house to play Texas Holdem.

I don't play either but given choice, I'm going to Texas before I ……

Or to say it another way, maybe it's all in the name.

Don

No gambling maybe? You know like in poker, domino's, golf, billiards. About 25 years ago I was stationed in NM. Not much to do around Clovis, so I shot pool at the local domino and pool parlor. Was bunch old men playing domino's at the back making all sorts of noise.

I asked the guy that was fleecing me out of my lunch money what was big deal about domino match. He said them old men some times have as much as 5k or more on game.

I said wow am I going to see some one get shot over dominos game? Two weeks later the guy I was shooting pool with was handing out the balls and taking the rent money for the tables. I said you working here now, he said no it's my place I won it in dominos games last week!
