My favorite patriotic song is America The Beautiful.

I found this on the old inner web but describes the way I feel about this wonderful song:

What is the meaning of the song America the beautiful?

"America the Beautiful" has been called "an expression of patriotism at its finest.". It conveys an attitude of appreciation and gratitude for the nation's extraordinary physical beauty and abundance, without triumphalism.

Then you're not thinking very hard. Gangnam Style and the Macarena come to mind and that took very little thought.

Failed pop song that, when played, you’re expected to stand and salute. Total waste of music IMHO.

I can think of worse songs, but this one is definitely on the top (or bottom, as the case may be) 100 list of "worst songs."

Lovin' You, Having My Baby, and Afternoon Delight are on that list.

America the Beautiful is a great patriotic song. And You're a Grand Ole Flag is awesome. I also really love This Land is Your Land, and who can forget If I Had a Hammer?

God Bless the USA is a smarmy white-bread chauvenistic ode to privilege. It requires that the singer is a man - unless it's a nod to the LGBTQ+ demographic, considering the very first stanza:

Quote:
If tomorrow all the things were gone
I worked for all my life
And I had to start again
With just my children and my wife
but somehow I get the feeling that most people singing this song are not women with wives.

A magical thing about being human - we can see happiness and joy in even the smallest/insignificant things - and we can join people with smiles and warmth w/simply a few words (or we can choose to simply stand back and admire the positivity they are emitting) *or* as humans, we have the ability to be negative, to say the smallest of things that will discourage people - it is like there are people who take pleasure throwing cold water on a group of people laughing, smiling and reminiscing about great memories. Not sure why.....

I want to thank everyone who has been so positive about a topic as small and simple as the discussion of a few uplifting songs ..... my wish for those who are negative - I hope you find the same happiness with something so small as a song - maybe a few birds playing in the grass, seeing a happy couple holding hands, gazing at a beautiful sunset.....

We are all happily retired and living in The Villages after fulfilling careers.certainly most of us can afford to display the flag. A flag pole can be installed with a solar light on top, or a small flag can be attached to your home , or even your light post. A lit flag can fly 23/7 while an unlit one is taken down at sunset. No, I’m not employed by the flag store, I’m just an ordinary retired citizen who loves this country, warts and all. God Bless America.

This thread is about more than a song. This thread is about the “cause” that co-opted the song 4 or 5-ish years ago.

Some people here know that. Others could be naive.

When I saw this thread highlighted in the TOTV email this morning, I thought, “Here it goes again. Why can’t I stop looking?”

Was this thread sent out as part the TOTV email notice because of naïveté? This thread is a political dog whistle.

Ironically, there are those among us now who are slinging slurs at other posters, accusing them of being un-American because they do not like this song. But what the attacked posters know is that this song is an anthem for a chunk of one side of the divide.

In this thread and at least one other one this morning, the anger and negativity are palpable. The timing is obvious. The remaining entrenchment is bone-chilling. But I have hope it can lessen for those those who can reclaim their own brains.

America is in a crucible. But Democracy is resilient. I hope. (And I am no commie-pinko, actually a moderate who believes we better get back to who most of us really are. Our dads saved the world. Who would — or could — save us — from ourselves? We better hold on — together.)

This thread is political. Pseudo-patriotic. Manipulative. I just called it out. Made it moreso. I decided it was worth it to shine a little light on the subject at hand. (Why oh why can’t I stop looking?)

Btw, the worst song ever is “MacArthur Park.” I have never figured out whyinthehell somebody would leave a cake out in the rain. Yeah, I know, a metaphor — the worst metaphor ever.
