Default In-line water filters for refrigerator

Has anyone tried to use an in-line water filter system cartridge on these GE refrigerators that come with ice maker without a filter?

I have a side-by-side unit and the manual that came with it shows a filter inside the unit. Well thats not what it has inside. Its got notta. So after calling TV and GE, they pushed me to Home Depot. Well I checked on-line for them and the site only shows the cartridge not the complete kit.

If anyone knows where to buy it locally please advise where?

Can't believe TV sells these units w/o any filters. CHE$AP, CHE$AP.

Some refrigerators come with the filter inside the right side door. Ours did not have one so I picked up an in line filter at Lowes and installed it behind the refrigerator. Made a big difference in drinking water. I'm not sure how they select which houses get what.

My filter light on the fridg. came on, so I started checking around and the filter costs $30 to replace. I'm also thinking about getting my own inline filter and mounting on back........should be able to save $$$$ instead of using the GE filter!
