Default Looking for TV Series to Watch

I'm ready to find something new and just looking for some input. I'll even consider older series, but ideally it would be something a bit newer than a couple of my favorite shows which I mention below, maybe something from 2010 or later. And having a number of seasons "in the can" would be very nice too...

I like detective shows and such, but I am open to any type of series if it's interesting enough. To give you a clue to my tastes, in the past I've liked Monk, The Mentalist, some NCIS (the original is all I've seen), sitcoms and various other types of shows. I rarely get hooked on pure drama. Monk and The Mentalist which I mentioned above had something in common...very good detective plots with really fun main characters and a humorous slant in every episode.

Okay, I'm open to suggestions. Again, I will consider any show if it's good.

The Blacklist would lead the pack for me.

The second would be Chicago P.D. Chicago Fire and Chicago Med.

Third would be Roseanne, The Conners, The Munsters, Hogan's Heroes, MASH.

Sorry some of them don't meet your request but they kept me off the streets during the pandemic.

SouthLAnd on HBOMAX is 4 seasons long and I believe close in quality and story to The Shield or The Wire.

Red Oaks on Amazon Prime 3 seasons.

You might also enjoy Godfather of Harlem and Condor on EPIX. Comcast charges $5.99 per month for EPIX.

Besides the regular channels what else do you have?

For example do you have prime video?

Wholesome series on Netflix: "Anne with an E," "Heartland."

Doc Martin, Longmire, Better Call Saul, Ozark, Hell on Wheels, Halt and Catch Fire, Virgin River, Godless, Sense8(not for the old school people), Everwood, Jericho...

Not sure where you’d find it, but we really enjoyed “The Closer”.

If you have access to Netflix, I can definitely recommend the series "The Kominsky Method". It stars Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin. It is about an actor who is an acting coach who would fit right in with The Villages crowd. There are 3 seasons with 8 episodes each and my wife and I have really enjoyed watching it. And in almost every episode, there is an "old" actor in a cameo role that you kind of recognize but have to watch to credits to be sure (like said "older")

Thanks for the input so far. Just a couple of additional bits of info regarding my request...

In reply to a previous question or two...I can access almost any show. Yes, I have Prime Video. So please forward your recommendations regardless of where you might have watched them.

Also, I do prefer higher resolution video. It doesn't have to be 4k or anything like that, but some of the older shows that are so grainy I probably wouldn't be able to get into. That's one of the reasons I requested something not toooo old in my op, like 2010ish or later.

Again, thanks for input so far. Keep the recommendations coming.

OP,

From what you said about your favorites, I think you might like the BBC’s New Tricks. Three retired detectives come out of retirement to solve cold cases. These “old” guys can be a bit set in their ways — which are not always according to accepted procedures — but they get the job done.

The series ran from 2003 to 2015. (We are not through all those seasons yet.) I like the series because you get a murder mystery without the gore and some witty dialogue and interesting glimpses into the detectives’ backstories.

Amanda Redman is their boss. She keeps them in line — sort of — well — not really — because they pretty much do whatever they need to do.

I recently found another British series starring Amanda Redman, The Good Karma Hospital. It’s not a mystery series though. It started in 2017. I am watching it currently and really like it. Wonderful scenery and cultural insights, too.

One of the funniest ones we have watched lately is Ted Lasso. I had put off watching it — although people kept telling me I had to. But I did not know anything about soccer so I thought I would not like it. Anyway — loved it — and added more British slang to my vocabulary.

Someone has mentioned The Kominsky Method. Michael Douglas stars in it and Kathleen Turner is in the last season as his ex-wife. It’s about aging with snappy dialogue. Liked it a lot.

I liked Monk, The Mentalist, and NCIS, so perhaps we're on the same wavelength. I haven't seen all the shows mentioned above, but agree Bosch, Godless, Longmire, The Closer (and spin-off Major Crimes) are excellent. Current fare, Mare of Easttown on HBO is quite good.
