Thanks to all who have commented and shared stories about your family’s and your service, and your losses. I think that this is obviously a very special year to remember why they fought.

My dad’s cousin, who was from Fleming County, Kentucky, was one of the original flag raisers on Mount Suribachi, Iwo Jima In 1945.

Unfortunately, he only lived for a few more days after the famous picture was taken. My dad was so proud of him.

Eisenhower Rec. Center has the actual flag our men took down to replace with our flag. Plus the soldiers that eere there signed the flag. I got chills when I saw it.

Cool story but sad ending.

My dad broke his leg in training 2 weeks before his unit got shipped to Iwo Jima.

I might not exist if that hadn't happened.

Oh! I didn’t know that. I’ll have to go see it. Thanks.

Aren’t fate and destiny interesting things?

Yes indeed fly the American Flag... To all us Veterans who fly the Great American flag all year long with a light projected on the flag at night, on Memorial Day the American flag should be flown at "Half Mast" (from sunrise to sunset) with No Other Flag attached to the flag pole. This day is not a celebration, but a day of remembrance of those who passed and served in the Armed Forces Just some friendly info.
NamVet "69"

The flag is flown at half-staff from Sunrise till noon
