Loud Talkers

We had neighbors that we called "loud talkers". Eventually our problem was solved when they enclosed their lanai.

Handling the Problem

I remember we had a similar problem in our home up north with some loud neighbors in the house next door. Our son had a record with a number of
different sound effects. One night he hooked it up to the window upstairs
without us knowing and he play a "freight train" going by. We lived 20 miles
from any tracks and he also played the sound effect of a 747 airplane flying about 5 feet over the houses. All the lights went on next door and we never had loud neighbors again..:loco:

maybe revisit some of the conversations with her after these gatherings like ask some question about what you heard and she will realize you can hear what is being said and maybe just maybe she might lower her voice if she knows you are listening to the conversations. Just a thought...

The houses are close together...

Your son sounds like my kind of guy. This made me recall how one Halloween many years ago, I setup speakers in our upstairs bedroom windows facing the street and played a Disney record of spooky haunted sounds. We normally got several trick-or-treaters on Halloween, but on that night, we didn't get even one ring of the doorbell!

. The next door neighbor is driving me nuts. She sits on her lanai talking on the phone in an extremely loud, nasal, New Jersey type accent. She sounds like a duck quacking. We can hear every word she says. Or, as she is doing tonight (and the past few nights), she is with a bunch of women on her lanai, and they are all talking, laughing, screaming, howling to the point I can't go on our lanai. We can hear them in the street, in our attic, in our bedroom -- everywhere. Last night it was well past eleven PM (I went to bed with earplugs).

Any Ideas?

Let's hope that a reasonable face to face talk with your neighbor works. They simply may not realize how loud they are.

When I hear of these neighborly issues, I feel so fortunate for having the neighbors we have. Best of luck!

In this morning's paper there was a headline entitled something like.."Before you complain to a neighbor, get to know him".

And although I didn't read the article, it made me think of this problem.

It is always to your advantage to get along with the people living around you. It makes your life more comfortable and pleasant and even safer..

If you would ignore this behavior for awhile and share some good experiences, maybe going out to dinner or sharing a dessert or something like that, they would become more aware of you as people and you would do the same.

and maybe, even, you would end of with them on one of your porches talking loud and laughing.

Sometimes I find the way the houses are situated to other houses it tends to amplify talking. Just saying. Does your neighbor know How loud she is?

Like graciegirl's diplomatic approach to this problem. You do not know how long you might have to live by the neighbor so the slow cautious approach seems the wisest.

Go ask to borrow something and find out more about her. Maybe, she knows something that is really funny and cannot contain herself.

I had a New Jersey roommate at the University of Denver and he was very quiet at least when compared to the others I had while I was there who were from N.D., Chicago, and some other place I cannot seem to remember.

GG is correct - again! I find it usually pays to approach a neighbor with a smile and perhaps a bottle of wine, some flowers or a dessert. Get to know them one on one. You will become a person hopefully deserving of consideration from them and vice versa. After some bonding occurs you may want to bring up the loud talking problem in a kind and gentle manner. Methinks she is probably a bit hard of hearing and does not realize she is bothering anyone. If this approach does not work then you could pursue another avenue.

Who was it who said "Good fences make good neighbors."?...

It was Robert Frost.
