Re: NY Mets

The Amazins' were not a second place team. They were actually a 6th place team by Major League Baseball rules. You're looking at the standings as 3 individual and separate leagues when, in fact, the National League is one league with three divisions. Since 4 teams must enter the post-season, the three division champs, of course, and then whichever remaining team has the better record of those teams which were not champs. In this year's case, the Colorado Rockies had a record of 90 wins and 73 losses. Thus, they become the 4th team in the post-season.
Even though the Mets had a better over-all record than the Cubbies, unfortunately for them, they are not in the Central division. Even San Diego had a better record than Chicago, but they, too, will stay home and watch it on television.
