I think they know, they know something is wrong with their friend and they pick up on our feelings. I don't think they understand death though, whenever we go out she sees a dog that looks like him and freaks out barking until she smells the dog and then she's done. I think she thinks he was stolen.

My heart goes out to you, your husband and your other dog, it's never easy.

Thank you all. We are actually having a more complicated time of it. Our other dog who is prone to seizures which are brought on by stress had four seizures last night and one this morning. We are adjusting medications per vet instructions but, as he has been seizure fee for months, we wonder if he is sensing Maggiebell's rapid downhill spiral. Yikes..this just is lousy.

It is a lousy time for you. If it's any consolation to you, please know that your TOTV family of fellow dog lovers is wishing you well during this tough time. Most of us have been through painful challenges with our pets. We do understand and hold you in our hearts.

When I had to have my 70 lb dog, Brutus, euthanized in 2010, I used a Mobile Vet, Angel Smith, 352-470-9537. Brutus was suffering with a brain tumor. I had to end his life, and my husband was working in Canada. I just couldn't emotionally handle taking him to a Vet's office. Angel was very compassionate and came to my home. I was able to lie on the floor and hold Brutus in my arms as he passed over.

I am so sorry about Maggiebell, and now her companion, who surely knows something is amiss. Our fur ball still races up to any male Rottie he sees, wagging furiously, thinking it's his best friend Sampson who died a year ago. I think it is the scent that's not the same and causes him to stop.

My heart goes out to you.

I just started using Dr. Angel Smith, Duffy'smom spoke so highly of her that I called her. My little girl is already 13, hopefully she has a few more good years but Dr. Smith and I already had "the talk".

When my other dog passed the vet I was using didn't believe in tranqing them before euthanizing, said it was "difficult". I was kind of new here and ready to start shopping for a new vet. As it turned out I didn't need to, he passed at home with me on the floor.

It's always hard, but I think it's even harder being away from professionals that you know. If I had been in NY when it happened I don't think I would have cremated him, but to me this place feels temporary.

I might gently add that some pet crematoriums cremate in groups, at least in MI, and what you receive is actually a portion of the cremains, not necessarily only those of your pet. It is a higher price for a private cremation. Be sure what you are getting, if that is important to you.
