Default Pipes freezing?

I'm a Villages wannabe (hope to be a resident soon) and have a friend who tells me that most of the houses have their water shutoff valves located in the garage with piping running along the outside wall. Since the garages are unheated I was wondering if anyone has had problems lately with the cold weather causing freezing of the pipes.

It never even occured to me to shut off the water to the inside of the house. But that would be the safe way to do it i guess. My shut off is in the garage. Garage isnt heated but i have good insulation in all of the garage walls and the atic. Garage always stays warm enough on cold nites where it never gets probably in the 50s or 60s at nite.If it gets any colder than it has been i think ill turn the water off to the house. Only thing that could freeze i think is the two outside faucets. Shutoff valve in garage turns those two lines off i think plus all water to inside of house. Only thing that stays on is the water line going to the irrigation system.

I really doubt if the inside of the garage would get to the point of freezing a pipe. During the day the outside temps have been 2 to 15 degress above 32 for the past 11 days (A couple of days had temps near/above 50. The garage temp will hold into the night a little and the temp only stays below 32 for X number of hours before warming up again.

In short - i think it would be rare to have any faucet issues in TV from the cold. I have some outside faucets here in MA that don't freeze even when I forget to shut them off or let them do a slow drip. And we haven't been above freezing even during the day for the past 11 days or so.

It does not go below freezing in the garage unless maybe you leave the door open. Even then, the residual heat from the house would keep the garage above freezing. I have not heard of any pipes inside the garages freezing. However, having said that, there have been a few irrigation pressure breakers that have froze and burst.
