I taught popular classes in Post-Apocalyptic Fiction for a number of years at a university. If you want a good book to read, try George Stewart’s “Earth Abides.” I think it was published in 1948, and there is a good reason it is still in print: it’s a great novel. The speaker is a very creative geologist with a graduate degree from Berkeley. He has what it takes to save civilization, if anyone does. However, there aren’t many people left alive, and the various accidents that happen kills off even more. By the end of the book, his great-grandchildren are good at hunting and gathering, but none of them can read or write. Another thought-provoking novel is “World Made By Hand,” by Jane’s Kunstler (2008). Set in a little town north of Albany, New York, life gets gradually more dangerous and things taken for granted are no longer available. Civilization is devolving. As T.S. Eliot wrote, “This is the way the world ends: Not with a bang but with a whimper.” Or if you want excitement, try S.M. Stirling’s novel “Dies the Fire” and the many sequels. |
Does anyone really think the super-rich cab keep their abodes from the rabble with 123 guns (FBI statistics) for every man woman and child in America in addition, to trillions of rounds of ammo stashed away?

Hum, on a restricted thread they are debating about food quality and entertainment. Propulsion OIL? SOLAR? Or a bunch of 70 year old rowers. |

Bwahahaha! Nothing even close to that... I'd love to know where you found that "statistic"... (p.s., you're only off by a factor of 100) Plus, I like your use of the word "rabble" for gun owners... Nice touch! |
The first thought I have on this is why do mega wealthy folks ALWAYS buy or build themselves GIANT homes. They could buy a say $3MM home and donate $40-50 Million to Charity. Notice just about everyone tries to get the biggest house. I was friends with a Realtor of the Year (who earned 7 figures regularly) and asked what her secret was. She said she only dealt with surgeons. She would send them pictures of what their peers just bought knowing they would have to find something bigger.
My second thought is that Capitalism is a good system (because it utilizes human's greed for generally the creation of opportunity for all) however just like the game "Monopoly" at some point there is a winner. We have reached that point where we know who the winners are in this round. They own/control all the money. So there needs to be a trophy given, money returned to the bank and start a new game. |
Its already here

I think the numbers I have seen are about 300 million guns in circulation in the US, and about 50% of people own guns. So, that leads to 2 guns per person on average. I am not sure if that 50% number was taking into account children. So, the 123 might be a bit high - LOL. And yeah, I think most gun owners a responsible and not rabble. |

If you're a competitive shooter you have even more. If you're a collector, more yet. Sorry those small numbers are beyond you. |

I subscribe to the pre-tribulation rapture theory so with any luck I can view their confusion from on high.

A very good book. :) |
Doesn’t it depend on the disaster? If there are huge tidal surges and tidal waves, being on a super yacht may not be prudent. After all, I’ve been in the North Atlantic and seen what waves can do to Navy ships built far stronger. More so, a super yacht is only as secure as the tactical team onboard to defend it. A simple air drone strike launched from well… anywhere… can end that party quickly. So, no, I wouldn’t waste my money on that idea.
One thing I do think about though is space exploration. Stephen Hawking encouraged development of another colony. If the planet does become uninhabitable, Mars may one day be an option and I would hope that those chosen would include a spectrum of talented individuals that can contribute to each other’s survival and not on their material wealth. |

Since this is "self reporting", I would suspect the numbers for both are higher... |

I have to admit (well, I don't have to but, I am going to) that every time I read someone posting that they have guns to defend themselves in the post-apocalypse that the image of an M1 Abrams coming up from underground and rolling up in front of dozens of people holding their automatic rifles and wearing their flak jackets... Maybe being well-armed will help deal with unruly neighbors, but If I am a billionaire, I will see your automatic rifles and raise you an armored battalion... Just saying. |

Neither have been defeated by multiple armored battalions...... |
If there is an apocalypse, money will be worthless (bitcoin too).
All you can imagine won't happen. One thing I do believe in is: BLESSED ARE THE MEEK, FOR THEY WILL INHERIT THE EARTH |

Well, I guess I don't understand the concept of criminals when there is no law - or government.
And no, I personally would not fear billionaires, that is not my point, my point is the guys with the most power (weapons?) will make the new laws. I expect I would be ignored by both sides since I have nothing they would be interested in. |
Well Said!
