Default Problem w/Tram Air Conditioner

Today I had the freon replaced in my 18 month old Tram air conditioner originally installed by Mumm's.

They charged me $90.00 and said the problem was a leak in the evaporator coil. The coil is under warranty but the labor will be $399.00.

It seems to me that the labor for a warranted part should be included if only 18 months old.

The service man said there were a lot of Villagers experiencing the leaks in the evaporator coils.

Has anyone else experienced something like this. The Villages should represent us better when choosing suppliers.

Jerry,

Yes, there were a spate of coil problems on Trane A/Cs....I first read about it on the Virginia Trace website a year and a half ago. $399 for labor seems pretty steep...maybe you should call the Villages Warranty Dept and get a better explanation of what was covered and for how long, especially given that this was a common problem.

By the way, we signed up with Munns for the extended Trane manufacturers warranty (I don't usually buy these, but, A/C in Florida....seems like something could easily break over time). I bought the warranty within the first year and it was (then) about $600 for 10 years total....parts and labor. For you newbies, something to look into. Cost is higher if you buy coverage after the first year.

Villages07

Thank you. I will call the Villages Warranty Dept.

I passed on the $600.00 10 year warranty when I moved in, but bought it today ($749.00 for 8-1/2 years).
I don't get credit for the $90.00 I paid for the freon but I won't have to pay for the ($399.00) labor to install the evaporator coil.

If Virginia Trace and others have been having problems with the coil, then the manufacturer, distributor (Mumms) or The Villages should do something.

We bought the Trane 10-year warranty when we moved into our 3-1/2 year old resale. The only drawback to it is that the 10 years started at the time the unit was installed, not from the date we bought it. As villages07 said, a/c in FL is just one of those things that's worth having a warranty on....
