For MFrench and many others--You nailed it about LBJ and Sec Def -McNamara (hereinafter-L & M)
1. 4400 SAMS were allowed to enter the ports of Haiphong from CHINA because L&M were afraid that CHINA might enter the WAR. Hell, the CHINESE and RUSSIANS were already there shooting us down! We lost about 625 jet aircraft in NAM. Some of the most intense AA since WW2.
2. L&M prohibited us from shooting down and MIGS in 1964-again worried the CHINESE would intervene.(this was disregarded like many of OBAMA/BIDEN orders were)
3. We were order to stop bombing MIG bases
4. We were given very strict return fire rules--but not as Stricklands as Obama/Biden's
5. We were using OLD, outdated and inferior equipment---M-16s became jammed because of cost cutting on quality of barrels and quality of ammunition. I flew in a WW2 leftover plywood recon a/c( we lost 1/2 our Men in 2 weeks from AA). On the DMZ we were using old ammunition boxes for bunker material vice concrete and rebar(reserved for the ARVN)
6. About 1/2 of our MARINE ground forces were located on fixed defensive outposts on the DMZ in range of horrific artillery weapons and out of our range pea shooters
Have to stop here-but it goes on and on and never really reported by our "media", s/f

So sorry for your loss. My friends husband just passed away as a result of the long term effects of Agent Orange from VietNam. So many died needlessly and again now, over 210,000 died needlessly because they would not act outside of their own political needs. So, so sad.

I know what you mean, and I don't consider them heroes either. The OP's friend is an example of a true hero.

But if you don't think some people do see sports and entertainment stars as heroes, I'm afraid you're deluding yourself.

Bill served in the Army for 20 years and was a Viet Nam veteran who was awarded the Silver Star for bravery during his first tour of duty there. Unfortunately it was an old man was carrying in his arms a small girl about 7 years old. He killed both of them, not a Viet Cong. So much for there being no friendlies in the area.

The Agent Orange poisoning caused severe medical conditions that made his life difficult and eventually killing him but he pushed on with his life not giving in to despair or whining constantly about his condition. He wasn't a saint and not the Devil but was a good father, good husband for 51 years, and a good friend.

I'm not looking for sympathy. I'm expressing my anger because his death won't be known beyond his family and those who read obituaries in their local newspaper. A man who gave more for this country than any celebrity or politician. Yet whose deaths receive nation and international attention? Hollywood celebrities, politicians and felons.

A sad story indeed. Thanks for sharing. FYI a program allowing caregiver reimbursement for family members was just extended to Vietnam, Korea a d WW II vets family members.

Sorry to learn of your friend's passing and of the challenges that he had to live with after having served his country...may he RIP

Relating this story about your FRIEND did not do service to him. Although it may have explained him dealing with PTSD. May he Rest In Peace finally.

I have met so many vets in our Parkinson's support group. They were sprayed with agent orange. Many have died since I have met them.
Your friend was a hero to you, his family and his country.
Our Military have been used as Guinea pigs for chemicals, drugs and even nuclear bomb fall out.

You shared a lovely story about your friend. He paid a heavy price for his service and we sincerely thank him. I read a quote recently that we all die twice - once when our spirit leaves our body and again when the last person says our name. He lives on with your stories. You are a good friend. Peace.
