Default Retirement Revolution

I think this week may be the second part of this on PBS. I have not seen it yet but plan to watch it. I realize that most of it is geared to those who have not yet retired. But the Baby Boomers will have a definite effect on TV so I thought some of you might want to watch this with me. It's on here at 10 but PBS schedules vary and even repeat sometimes. Right now Amelia Earhart is on our PBS station. Lost forever. Like some of us Boomers I guess.

Hey fumar,

Thanks for the artwork. Looks good.

Have I got a book for you. Something tells me that you may be a flyboy. If so, you will really like this one. The Happy Bottom Riding Club by Lauren Kessler.

Wait! Wait! Wait, fumar. Wait! I know you want to run away to draw a picture to go with that title. But there's more.

The rest of the title is The Life and Times of Pancho Barnes. But in case you are still here and even though you may already know this, I just need to make it clear for anybody else who may not. Pancho Barnes for a time was "the fastest woman on earth," flying the fastest civilian airplane in the world.

And she called herself "the greatest conversation piece that ever existed."

The Happy Bottom Riding Club was the name of her bar out there in the desert where Yeager and the boys liked to hang out. The bar was in The Right Stuff.

Uh oh. I think I may have just tried to give the great fumar homework. Oh well, he probably ran off two paragraphs ago to draw a new picture inspired by this title?

fumar, fumar, are you still here?

Be wary of the advice put forth for retirement by that program. *These 10 steps for a successful retirement are proposed and not all of them make sense for most people... *

1. Confirm your social security and Medicare benefits

2. Set a detailed, realistic, written "Retirement Plan"

3. Save more – and save automatically

4. Invest in disability and life insurance

5. Get all the professional help you can

6. Broadly diversify your investments

7. Buy annuities for retirement income

8. Buy "medigap" insurance

9. Buy long-term health care insurance

10. Don't count on home equity as your sole source of retirement income

Long term health care insurance, life insurance, and annuities are certainly not for everyone...maybe not even for most of us. *They are nice, but could make many of us insurance poor. *

Why would such an "objective sounding" program offer this advice? *Oh, yes, it is sponsored by Mass Mutual Insurance. ;D *Conflict of interest? *Self serving. *Oh yeah.

There will be some good information provided amidst much suspect, self-serving information. *It is for the discerning to pick out the true from the false.

Bottom line: looking through the material, it appears to be more of an infomercial for Mass Mutual than an objective report.

gf,

I know.

It's like that money show I listen to on NPR every Saturday. It is sponsored by Thrivent for Lutherans.

But I always come away from these things having learned one little thing at least.

I happen to be a fan of dividends, but I never really thought about what the guy said about it helping out with corporate governance.

Now, where did fumar go? He hijacked my thread and I loved it and I hijacked him back and now I think he is gone.

I watched it last night and found it somewhat depressing. All they talked about was how tough it is to retire and how people are working into their 70's!!!!! :'(

At least, the part I was awake for talked about that. I did tivo it and will try to stay awake when I watch it again.

I didn't pick up on the Mass Mutual sponsorship insurance recommendation connection, but did hear (and did disagree) with one of the CFP's who recommended the long term care insurance. It would leave me insurance poor, and I'd probably be turned down anyway (I'd have to check too many "yes" boxes on the "Did you ever have...." part of the form). Thanks for the tip!

I saw some of it and while they did show some people working into their 70's for financial reasons they also showed others like me who are looking for an 'encore' career. Something that is somewhat opposite of their first career. For me it is going from software programming to becoming an RN. It is somewhat about money in that I don't want to work for a low wage, I'd rather just retire if that was the case. I'm moving into something that interests me and pays a decent wage.

I was disappointed that i didn't see the type of people who retire to TV on the show. Those that want to be active (almost hyper active) in their retirement years. I actually think that is becoming the norm. At least i didn't see it on the part of the show that i saw.

Russ, I agree about the lack of identifying any hyper-activity! Perhaps TV has a monopoly on active retirees?

For many years I have been interested in money matters. I don't really know why. I just am. I read stuff. I watch shows. I even go to those dinners once in awhile where somebody always wants to sell annuities. And from each of these things that I do, I always learn a little something.

The PBS show that I started this thread with had its moments. Not a lot of moments. But some.

I am putting another link here to one of my favorite shows. It is Marketplace Money, the weekend edition, which is on in my neck of the woods on Saturday mornings. I often miss it at that time but listen to it later on the computer. Here is a link to last week's show about housing.

http://marketplace.publicradio.org/e....php?show_id=8

If you like this, you can navigate the site and bring up old shows and see if the topics interest you enough to listen to those, too, whenever you want to. Isn't technology wonderful? -- sometimes.

I stopped back in here this morning to this thread to do a little cross-reference for any of you who might be interested. There is discussion here on TOTV of starting an investment club for education purposes. If you like self-education on money matters, you will find the discussion under the Clubs forum. I realize that most of you have found it if you have an interest, but I put this here just in case.

If I were among you there in TV, I would definitely be interested. But for now I can only talk about it and shout my encouragement from back here in Ohio.

Good luck to those of you who are interested in this club. Maybe I will get to join you some day.

Count me in if an educational financial club gets going. However, I'm a snowbird and wonder how helpful I can be.

Good luck and I'll continue to follow under the 'Club' section of the forums.
