Some on your list, like New Jersey and Rhode Island, can give you a bad impression if you just stay on I-95 and think you’ve seen them or just use Newark Airport while traveling. Rhode Island, though small, has some lovely areas. New Jersey? I’ve spent weekends for ten years in New Jersey near Trump’s golf course, involved with horses and fox hunting. It’s one of the most beautiful parts of the country, and a very different world from Newark and Jersey City. It’s filled with mountains, trees, fields, flowers. As for South Dakota, it has some very beautiful places, mostly around the western edge. Most of the state is flat and miles of corn, wheat, soybeans, or prairie. Like much of Nebraska. I find that beautiful, but lots of people find it boring. As for American Indians, unless you go to a reservation, chances are that metal one at a rest stop in your link is the only one you’ll see. Instead, go there to see real Dakota farm families in real pickup trucks who live on real farms and shop in real American towns and WalMarts. Enjoy their exotic Scandinavian, German, Ukrainian, and Russian faces and traditions and accents. This is an amazing country, but so much of it doesn’t reveal itself if you stick to the freeways. A lot of it is more “a good place to be” than “a good place to visit.” Some is more “a good place to have left.”
I was stationed for 3 years in the Air Force (or Farce depending on how deep you drill down) near Omaha, Nebraska. I always found interesting things to do, places to go, interesting people to meet. I got 1-month vacation per year so I could travel all around Nebraska. They did get overly ga-ga over their "BIG RED" college football team. Also, back then (maybe still) the College Baseball World Series was in Omaha.

Sturgis is a small town, not a city by any stretch of the imagination. Their rally crowds are so huge I doubt they will miss you. I’m leaving Monday with sister and brother-in-law for the West. Been many times but she hasn’t, so a bucket list trip for sure in the RV. Taking in virtually all the national parks east of California from the Grand Canyon, Zion, Yellowstone, Etc. Be gone a tad over 6 weeks. Did Alaska couple years ago, three months, but the border is now closed. Travel now while you can as there’s much to see here, especially since you don’t know our longevity.

That sounds like a fantastic trip! Six weeks so you can take your time. I have been to many of the national parks in the west, sometimes in a motorhome. They were wonderful trips. Take lots of photos!

1880 Train - South Dakota Rail in the Scenic Black Hills

Amtrak does not have service in South Dakota but this looks very interesting.
