Florida is one of the most crime oriented states I have seen, around or in any of the major cities. The Villages is a pretty safe place, we all know that. For those that feel the need to have a concealed weapon, I fully support their rights. And I hope they never have the need to use it as it is a life changing event. But it's always good to still be alive and your family safe. The Lady that was arrested for having the Stun Gun, has a legitimate need based on her personal history. She chose to carry a device that would incapacitate a perpetrator rather than kill him/her. |
the argument of what to do or not to do based on a slice of life in TV is pretty confining......and unrealistic.....when measured against the over all reality of the world we live in .....of which TV is a very small part!

*sigh* It's not about being afraid in TV...

Those interested in my attitude, based upon 40 years of law enforcement experience which includes serving at the city, county and federal levels and in positions as diverse as dispatcher, jailer, street cop, detective, hostage negotiator and special agent, might want to check my posting in the thread about protecting yourself at an ATM. What you learn about human depravity when working as a street cop cannot be adequately communicated to one who has not seen it. Those who have seen it are understandably reluctant to go out in public unarmed. I know people who even carry a firearm while inside their own home. Arf. :police: . |
If I KNEW when to carry and when not to carry..........life would be simpler......but I don't so I do.

Most who carry have weighed the consequences, have taken myriad gun safety courses, spend their fair share of time at a shooting range. I think few with concealed carry permit without a lot of thought behind it. We don't carry because it makes us bigger and stronger nor to win an argument. We carry because we feel there is a real need. It doesn't mean we're afraid all the time. It doesn't mean we will pull our weapon out at the slightest provocation. It does mean that should the need arise, we are able to protect ourselves and those we care about.
Personally, I can never imagine pulling my Glock to protect my property. You want my stuff, be my guest but you give me even the slightest inkling that you mean to harm me or mine, be prepared to get shot and I was not taught to aim to wound. And, yes, I am willing to suffer the consequences should that happen. |

CAIR and the New Black Panther Party are stirring up minorities intentionally along with Al Sharpton Barack Obama and Eric Holder. Ferguson is becoming such a problem that the group Oath Keepers offered their services to Ferguson residents. If I were a cop I go on strike. Heck of a way to treat people who place their lives on the line to protect citizens. |

I can understand the concern of those about shooting and having long court battles such as we've seen lately. It's up to those carrying to discipline themselves to not shoot unless their life is at stake. Then if you had to shoot it would still be better to face a jury than have a funeral. In most cases the showing of a firearm when confronted is enough to end the threat. |

I have been shooting for over 30 years - pistol, rifle, trap, skeet etc. I was a trained range instructor for about 10 years. Even when I thought I heard something "outside" I have yet to grab my gun. Besides, I would never just walk outside to look - that would give the perp a distinct advantage over me. No, I don't carry in The Villages but certain times when I leave here I do. Believe me you do not have to fear me. Or, I suspect, 99.9% of legal carry permit holders. As the saying goes - I'd rather have it and not need it then need it and not have it! |

This thread is about stun guns, whether they are legal in FL and the pros and cons of having one. It has gone severely off track. Please return to the OP's question or the thread will be closed.

I think a stun gun presents more danger to the person carrying it than to an attacker. Pepper spray would be a better option

I don't know the Florida gun laws yet. We hope to move to your Paradise when I retire in July. In the meantime, please don't bring or transport any guns, including stun guns, into or through NJ. (2C: 39-3h) We will have our guns, including my Lady Smith 357 Mag with pink grips, sent to Florida from our local gun shop. We are looking for a new home when we visit for the 4th time in January. We'd love a 3 bedroom with privacy North of 466A, ideally with room for a pool. Any suggestions would be welcome. And thanks again for all your wisdom and advice. We really appreciate it.
