It would be dumb not to. If you can't move from that area then it is your responsibility to protect yourself and your family. A call to the police isn't going to save you by the time they get there and will only get you a report of the crime scene.

Ray in penn means ray in Pennsylvania...

Apologies posted this morning and then went to work. I had no intention on frightening the herd. Just so everyone is on board it is about 30 degrees outside with a low of about 15 expected. A cold front is blowing in and we have high winds. I took the dog out and the Walk and driveway have slick icy spots.

I am sitting next to a gas stove that resembles an old coal stove. It is on more than off with the cold.

I can't move to TV yet because my son is a sophomore in HS. Yeah late start.

Thanks Ray, but it would be really helpful if when you shared these situations, (roof repair and burglary) you identified immediately that you were not in The Villages. It's interesting to read what is going on in your part of the world, but you need to make clear that it is your part of the world and not TV. Thanks

I stop by to offer any help they may need I find them, two empty nesters, sitting in their ransacked home in shock "they took all my jewelry" They had been at a Super Bowl party. I offer to watch the home when they are away..(I know cows already out of the barn). She says they won't be back..I am not so sure. She is just over chemo for breast cancer. I head home - a couple of hundred yards - sick to my stomach.

A few weeks ago I signed up for police alerts in the small crime ridden city where I work (10 miles from home) I am shocked to see one or two shootings, bank robberies, drug bust with hundreds of bags of heroin each and every day. I knew it was bad but I had no idea. The local paper has an expose on crime and the heroin problem in the city..

on Friday a colleague tells me the police came to his home owners association meeting and said the criminals are now hitting the suburbs. Knock on door if no one is home rob the place.

I take the lock off the shotgun... Dum I know but I sleep better. I have an alarm, low voltage exterior lights and a back up 65lb alarm with teeth. Not much else I can do.

Ray, your post intrigued me and sent me searching the Internet. Pennsylvania certainly has a serious heroin problem. I found story after story of the overdose and abuse problem that is now plaguing your beautiful state. It is very disturbing that the deadly and very addictive drug is being used more and more by our youth today. It is very sad. There are some seriously sick individuals in our society-regardless of where you live.

When something like this occurs we are all touched in a way. Like the ripple effect. Just by reading about it on a website forum and realizing the chain of people affected in the cycle is disturbing. A women recuperating from cancer treatments who is trying to enjoy a gathering of friends, you and your family, other neighbors, co-workers, police officers...I hope you all find a way to help each other as a community and to stay safe and happy.

No one way to fix Western Pennsylvania's heroin problem, report says | TribLIVE

If I lived in such a place as Ray does, I would put my house on the market, take whatever was offered, and LEAVE.

It just gets worse (In Pennsylvania near the De border)

Last night my wife was shopping with her sister who lives about 15 minutes away. I had just walked the dog and noticed one of my low voltage outside lights was acting up so I fooled with it a bit and came in. My son was busy with his game in the front of the house. Then the dog begins to make a ruckus I go to the front of the house look and see nothing. Then there is someone banging and pulling on our outer door. I yell Carolyn is that you? No answer and I don't see her car. More noise I run (more of a hobble, old man bad knees) and get the shot gun, load it and dial 911. I tell them the story and that I am armed. The police say put down the gun. I stay inside I don't put down the gun until A few minutes pass and here comes the wife. I go outside sans shot gun and hustle the wife inside. Police come and look around and find nothing.

Before the police leave I see my neighbor and tell him about the neighbors Super Bowl night burglary ( they stole an obscene amount of jewelry) and what just happened. He generally keeps to himself. He says well "I've had my door banged on twice in the last few weeks. I've even gotten my gun with the laser and swept the woods to let them know I mean business". He shows me he's got a small handgun in his pocket.

I go back in the house and realize it's 39 degrees out and I'm drenched with sweat. I sit down and think did that really happen? Some neighbors stop by and they say they are getting cameras...he also makes some suggestions about how he keeps his shot gun ready.

I usually sleep quite well but this morning I am up at 430AM. The neighbors burglary already had me on edge no doubt. I think Kids? Could it be? I just don't know.

Nearby Delaware in particular Wilmington was just voted "one of the most dangerous small cuties" I think 2 more years...
