Tiger Woods will likely face a lengthy recovery following his near-fatal car crash in Los Angeles this week, experts have said.

Surgeons said the injuries were treated "during emergency surgery by orthopedic trauma specialists." Woods suffered "open fractures affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones" that had to be stabilized by inserting a rod in his

He added that additional bone injuries to his foot and ankle were "stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling."

"Typically with injuries like that, patients are not allowed to bear any weight on it for the first four to six weeks," he said. "You probably won't be able to put a full amount of weight on it until maybe three months after the surgery."

And he said it would likely be between nine months to a year "for or any sort of decent recovery from an injury like that."

He added that infection is a primary concern because Woods had an "open" fracture, meaning the bone broke through the skin, and the golfer will probably have to undergo additional surgeries in the next few months to stave off infection.

Well DUH, if you saw the vehicle, he's lucky he's alive at all!!!! There are no airbags down where the legs are so that part of the car caves in and you can see that it did just that.

please don't 'duh' - some folks can be so demeaning behind that keyboard.. Did you read my prior posts - there IS a driver's knee air bag in that Genesis model. yet again, another automotive and accident expert. and apparently yet again, someone that jumps to a conclusion without review the posts.

Sheriff executes search warrant for black box from Tiger Woods' crashed car.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has executed a search warrant to obtain data from the “black box” in the car that was crashed last week by famed golfer Tiger Woods, sheriff’s personnel confirmed Tuesday to USA TODAY Sports.

But the sheriff’s department has decided not to seek a warrant to obtain Woods’ blood to help determine whether he was under the influence of medication at the time of the crash Feb. 23.

To obtain such a warrant for the black box, law enforcement is required to establish there was probable cause that a crime was committed, even if it’s just a misdemeanor.

A sheriff’s deputy Tuesday downplayed the warrant as a routine part of their probe. He said he didn’t consider it a criminal investigation, but rather due diligence. The affidavit that the sheriff’s department used to establish such probable cause was not immediately available.

Cherney and other accident reconstruction experts told USA TODAY Sports that the evidence indicates Woods wasn’t paying attention when he left his lane and kept going straight instead of sticking with his lane as it curved right. He instead went over the curb through a median, knocked down a sign, went into opposing lanes, then went off the road, hit a tree and rolled over in a single-car crash.

After hitting the initial curb, he traveled about 400 feet in a relative straight line without apparent evidence of steering out of it or braking in the form of skid marks. If he had been looking down at his phone momentarily, the theory is that he wouldn’t travel that far in a straight line without trying to steer out of it or without leaving more evidence of braking on the road.
Cherney, who walked the crash scene after it happened, said it looked like a classic case of being asleep at the wheel.

“You can probably tell that if he slammed on his brakes after jumping the divider he would not have traveled as far, would not have as much damage to the front of his car and would not have had as extensive injuries to his foot all because he would have reduced his vehicle’s speed,“ Cherney said.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva last week said the crash was “purely an accident.”

However, the sheriff’s department tempered that somewhat Tuesday after USA TODAY Sports asked the basis of that conclusion.

“The Sheriff spoke about the information known at that time, and said it appeared to be a traffic accident,” the department said in a statement. “However, the traffic collision investigation is (on)going and traffic investigators have not made any conclusions as to the cause of the collision.”

Schloegl confirmed the black-box data has been downloaded but didn’t reveal its contents. The data from it typically can show the vehicle’s speed, steering angle, brake and acceleration activity before impact.

“As far as getting a warrant or getting the download from the car, we just do it automatically,” Schloegl said. “We want answers, so that’s the route we take.”

He said Genesis has taken possession of the vehicle.

“We’re done with it,” he said. “We’ve got everything we need.”

It's a fool's errand to try to explain injuries in such a crash. Crashes become complicated very quickly. Our cars are designed to pass certain criteria in specific tests. In the real world things are not as cut and dried.

The crashed suv photo shows a relatively intact vehicle with crumpled ends that are designed to crumple. The exact how and why of the man's injuries are of no consequence to anyone but him. I certainly would not lay blame on the vehicle without a thorough investigation report by an expert.

There is probably a lot more to story than we know.

Because you are stomping on the brake pedal with such force that when you collide, your right leg gets messed up from the sudden compression force.

This, along with other suppositions, will be answered in due time. Fortunately the vehicle had the latest vehicle monitoring system (black box) which the authorities have already downloaded the data. It will should many of the vehicle's parameters prior to and during the crash - INCLUDING brake application.

Personally, I DO hope that Tiger is "exonerated". As some noted, he has had his ups/downs - and the 'downs' were totally on him. So the best outcome IMO would be for all the crash evidence to show that Tiger simply was speeding on unfamilar roads, with NO indication of substance abuse, 'falling asleep' etc, lost control and the primary injuries were caused by extreme forces of braking during the impacts. ...his life goes on as well as a long road of recovery and therapy and rehab - and hopefully back to Pro golf.

Even with the most highly advanced black box technology there is going to be a limit as to what the black box will reveal. The authorities already know that Tiger was speeding and there are no signs that he attempted to apply the breaks. Of course, if the vehicle went airborne directly after hitting the median strip and flew across the roadway and into the brush then there wouldn't be skid marks on the road. The fact that he had such extensive injuries in his right leg does seem to indicate that he was bracing himself against the brake pedal.

I don't think that Tiger fell asleep behind the wheel, I think he was speeding and misjudged a curve in the road. The authorities have mentioned that accidents happen at that curve from time to time.
