It’s a shame we live in a world where you’re afraid to own nice things.

NotGolfer 08-25-2023 07:29 AM

ANYTHING I'd have to lock in a safe----I would not need. Did y'all know that one day ALL that we have here will burn?? I used to love "stuff"...would purchase name-brand clothing, want beautiful things to put in an even more beautiful house. In the end it won't matter. Did you ever see a U-haul behind a hearse???
Our culture (maybe all the world) loves "status symbols".....but to what end. I'd rather be approachable by those around me than making an "impression" (you will, one way or another).

Nicely said!

I own very expensive jewelry and I have a Rolex, if you are afraid to wear what you have, you should not have it. I wear what I want and I never thought twice about it being stolen. I do not live my life afraid. My watch was a great investment.

I like to look at the estate sales to remind myself what will happen to our “stuff” when we are gone. Everything just spread out on tables for people to paw through. I feel sad for people who define themselves by their possessions.

I have never liked status symbols, or anything that is expensive. I can afford expensive things, but I never buy them. Would not even consider buying a Rolex.

UpNorth 08-25-2023 08:09 AM

Got a solid gold Rolex as a retirement award years ago. Never worn it in public, currently stored in my safe deposit box. Too uncomfortable to walk around with $20k exposed on your wrist. People get killed for less than that.

My goal is to have four of them. I have four grandkids. My goal is to leave one for each of them when I am gone. You can leave money for your inheritors all you want but nobody will think of you or remember you with a pile of cash or not a pile of cash. But every time they put on that piece of jewelry on have it be a ring or a watch that they will remember that it was mine and they’ll remember me. Hoping they’ll have pleasant thoughts of course.

MrFlorida 08-25-2023 08:47 AM

Don't need a watch. I use my phone as a watch like most of us I guess.

Using a phone instead of a watch is definitely a younger generation thing. I see a lot less watch wearing here too.

Rolex from Mexico made in Switzerland. $15 can't tell the difference unless you look at the second hand.

Are you sure they’ll even want them? This generation do not wear watches anymore. They wear Apple devices or use their phones. Take them on a grand vacation and you will all have memories for a lifetime.

After a certain time I think the only “impressions” that are important are the ones that please us. Most of our friends like us just the way we are.

Exactly!

Just like wearing my father in law's watch at my daughter's wedding gave her joy, her engagement ring (which came from one of a pair of diamond earrings, from her great, great grandmother), left to her by her grandmother gives her joy and reminds her of her grandmother, every time she looks at it...

If and when I have grandchildren, I hope they'll learn to play guitar, so I can give them my 50 yo old Martin and my vintage Fenders...

Yes, they will want them. Not necessarily wear them, but treasure them all the same. Just as I do with my grandfather’s pocket watch.

Do you treasure it because it was expensive? This is a very different generation. I think if I gave my kids a Rolex they would just sell it and buy something they like rather than have something they need to keep in a vault.

My husband and I both have Rolex watches, and the heirs want them.

No, as a Jesuit serving the poorest area of Calcutta, it was one of two items he actually owned. (If it was made of kryptonite, I couldn’t have valued it more.)

Two of my daughters want their grandmother's gold Rolex. The oldest is more into Vintage Jewelry and Clothing (that's her line of business) and has little interest.

The younger one will probably get it and the middle one will get my wife's Rolex as they are the same watch (her father bought two of them when in Europe, some 45 years ago, when they were cheap by today's standards...). That way the younger one will also have something special from her grandmother...

They borrow stuff all the time for special occasions, as one shares a townhouse with 3 other girls and the other just got married last year and living in a rented condo, with no place to secure them...

When they are more settled in their living arrangements, we'll give them to them to keep...

Probably why I love (mechanical) watches, guitars, and firearms. While I've never built a watch (yes, you can buy the cases, movements, etc and customize one for yourself), I have built a few guitars and rifles. It's fun and you learn how to troubleshoot problems that may pop up.

I bought my first Rolex some 35 years ago. It wasn't very expensive back then. It was a present to myself after I reached a profession milestone I had set. Later I bought a Breitling Chronograph that became my daily wearer for years.

After my Father in Law passed, my Mother in Law gave me a Breitling Chronograph with a slide rule in the bezel he had which was made in 1963. I don't know if he bought it used or if he was the original owner. But it didn't work. It was beyond my ability to fix, so I sent it to an Horologist outside of Philly, who serviced it and it's run like a top ever since...

I got my 2nd Rolex from a friend who owns a pawn shop. Killer deal on a stainless Daytona!

I still wear a watch daily, and I rotate between most of the watches (except the vintage Breitling, which I only wear for special occasions. I wore it to my middle daughters wedding last year and when she saw it on my wrist, she teared up because "Poppy Jack" was there...).

Currently, I'm wearing a Seiko Diver Automatic...

Currently, I'm on the hunt for a good deal on an Automatic Omega to go with the wind up one my wife gave me on our wedding day. It's a gold, wafer thin dress watch with a leather band.

Did I mention I love watches?

Watch collector myself, the mechanicals with 300 individual components timed nearly perfectly always fascinated me. Quite a piece of engineering.

The meteoric rise in Rolex prices on the grey market due to the company unable to meet production demands makes them a target for thieves as they are so recognizable.

MrFlorida 08-27-2023 08:55 AM

Don't really need a watch, only have 3 times. Daytime, Nightime, and T time...
