I sometimes buy—and sell—used CDs on Amazon. For me, these are generally somewhat obscure CDs made from LP records of the past, reissued. If they are in excellent condition, many will sell. Many reissued album CDs are no longer available new. If that’s the case, a used CD at $10 may sell. If the CD is available new for $10, I always ask less for used. I look at the price of new and used CDs on Amazon. Sometimes they are selling for a penny or a dollar. I won’t try to sell a book or CD for less than $3. It’s just not worth the bother and the time in the post office line. Not enough profit. Some CDs are rare enough that people offer them for hundreds of dollars. Don’t be greedy. If all the used copies are $500 up, no one is buying them. Offer yours for $15 and it will sell.
If the CD isn’t in excellent condition, don’t try to sell it. If you took it out of the jewel case and kept a dozen in your purse, like one girl I knew, forget it. If you sell it in bad condition, it will come back to bite you and ruin your rating, and you will lose money on the deal. Ideally, ship CDs in one of those cardboard CD mailers, even if they cost money. Many people ship them in padded envelopes, and often the jewel cases are cracked in the mail. At the least, tape the jewel case inside a couple pieces of corrugated cardboard before putting it in the padded envelope. Because of the size, it will add nothing to the cost, and it is a thoughtful thing to do.
If you bought mostly CDs that were gigantic sellers, chances are they are now worth nothing because there are a hundred or more for sale.
Listing CDs on Amazon takes time, effort, and know-how, but for many CDs, there are buyers. I have most of mine on my computers now, but the original CDs have cover art, liner notes, and sometimes extensive booklets about the band inside. That makes them worth having. I wonder what happens when there is a system that replaces the way we currently save them on computers, like MP3 or WAV. In ten years, will our songs disappear? Will they be unplayable. I’m one of those who plays CDs in the car, particularly books on CD. But many new cars no longer have CD players. I no longer have a computer with a CD read/write. I have to plug in an external one. What goes next?
