Dodge Dart...Square like a shoe box but 8 cylinder and quick..

'39 Chevy coupe, sick six, three on the tree. I replaced it ASAP with a '47 Ford coupe, flathead V8 into which I ended up putting an Olds V8. Put the old flathead into my brother's chopped Model A Coupe. Then I got into convertibles and never looked back. My favorites were a 1955 Jaguar XK140 roadster I owned in college and then a 1967 RS SS L78 Camaro convertible with the 375 HP 396 having solid lifters and a huge Holley, a 4 speed and a 4:10 rear end. At that time I discovered and frequented Market Tire in the DC area, greatly benefitting from their warranty policy as I burned a lot of rubber with the car. It looked just like this one except the top was white. According to this video only 110 convertibles out of the 1,100 L78s were manufactured. Wish I still had it. 1967 Chevrolet Chevy Camaro RS SS L78 Convertible in Marina Blue - My Car Story with Lou Costabile - YouTube
At this point I mostly drive a BMW X5 xDrive 50i which I dearly love. If anybody is into flatheads here is the website of a friend of mine from HS who has taken them to the extreme. Roadrunner Engineering - Home - Supercharge Your Ford Flathead |

I was a lowly sophomore at suburban HS in Houston TX. Me and my geeky friends were standing in the parking lot before school, trying to look cool. Then I saw it. A 1963 Chevy Impala Super Sport convertible slowly prowled into the parking lot, the V-8 with that unforgettable rumble sound. We all looked, stared, hoped and fantasized. The twin flags and badging on the sides. White on the outside, red seats. A senior was driving. He had a gorgeous well-endowed blond sitting in the other front bucket seat. I could never decide which was more beautiful … the Chevy or the blond. I leaned toward the car, At that moment, I realized life is unfair. I would need to work to achieve my dreams. I never did get the Chevy but some years later got a customized, hi performance Mustang convertible which I loved too. But I’ve never forgotten that Chevy. |
An orange 1974 VW Bus was the first motor vehicle I bought on my own. I bought it used in 1984 for $750. Like many VWs, it had an air-cooled Porsche 911 engine. Like most VW buses of that time, the heater box was broken. It was a 3-speed manual transmission with the standard VW H-pattern stick shift, so reverse was to the LEFT of 1st gear, and reverse almost always involved a little grinding before it would take hold. I had to do a lot of body work on the sliding passenger door and to patch up a fairly large hole in the floor behind the driver's seat. I did all the work myself with dad's rivet gun, sheet metal, a tub of Bondo, and 2 cans of orange spray paint.
My current car is a cheap crappy piece of tin that I hate. My next car will actually have an arm rest. And if the dash and the area under the windshield is black, I will have it covered with light fabric so it's not 400° when I get into the thing in the afternoon. |

1966 Chevelle SS396/375hp; Hooker headers; 4spd Rockcrusher transmission w/ Hurst shifter; 3.75 Locker Rear End. No other car in NE Arkansas could stay with it on the quarter mile.

1978 Cutlass Supreme in lime green with white leather interior. It was given to me by a family member. Seemed like it a
Was a block long and parallel parking it was “interesting”. But it had a V8 and that baby could move. Must have contributed to my lead foot |

It was black, and the turn signals were a flipper thing that came out on either side of the car. No turn signal lights. Of course, before the strict rules. A Pittsburgh Authority Bus made a right turn from the left lane and pretty much did it in. Then we had some German car that cracked my brother and I up because it said Fahrt on the gear shift indicator. We were young and immature. Then we had a 1960 red Triumph Herald convertible (four seater) that I drove in high school and then college till it gave up the ghost. My father had died by then, or it would still be running today. But my favorite car was my 1972 TR6. I loved that car till we had our second child in 1978, and it had no back seat. Well... I still loved it, but I had to give it up. I really wanted a TR4 or 4A, but by the time we could afford one, they weren't being made. And used cars had a lot of problems back then. My husband had a 1967 Mustang for about 20 years till we moved down here. He loved it. I didn't like driving it--no power steering, no power breaks, heater stuck on "On" and no air conditioning. It looked pretty cool, though. |
1975 Ford E-150 van bought it in 1978. It was a painters van which I proceeded to customize with a sun-roof, side port hole windows and louver covers over both rear and both side doors. I sent it to an upholstery shop where they custom made wall and ceiling panels in tuck and roll from black naugahyde! A custom Pioneer supertuner with a power booster and some pretty loud speakers. 4 inch foam glued on plywood then covered in a nice thick shag carpet to be able to sit on the floor comfortably and then had a custom 3 fold couch made which could fold out to a full size bed. Then I installed 2 cruising reclining captains chairs up front. I cruised around the states from my home in New England out west to Rawlins Wyoming down to Ashland/Protection Kansas then down on to Odessa Texas working my way around. I worked as a laborer on a natural gas pipeline as a welders helper, also worked on and off of oil rigs in west Texas. I took a year off from college to tour the country, what a long strange trip it was. Now I drive a '13 Chevy truck.

My favorite all time vehicle was my second ride, a Harvester International Scout. I don’t remember the model year, but I bought it very used around 1978. That thing would go through just about anything when the hubs were locked into 4 WD.

Twin brother and I bought '29 Model A also for $75.

My first car a 1930 Model A. Had sawdust in the tranny and oatmeal in the radiator. Paid $100 for her. The one car I'd take back in a flash was my '63 split window 'tanker' that I sold in '69 for $3300 while in route to Nam. Today my baby is Black Beauty, a modified '03 Thunderbird...

Ordered the car in Apr. 1967. Graduated high school May 1967. Picked up the car in June 1967. Brand new ordered the way I wanted it. Gold colored 1967 GTO. All for less than $2800 out the door. A real muscle car. Great memories.

Mine was a 51 chevy sedan. Bought it for $75 in 1960 because the engine was blown and I needed to rebuild it. I had it ready to go when I turned 16 in 61. I had several different cars over the next 5 years. In 1969 I bought a 64 GTO 389, triple carbs 4 speed. Fortunately I sold it before I killed myself with it. Now I drive a 7 passenger SUV so we can all go together when the grand kids arrive.
