The "pony keg" (convenience store) near our house had a candy counter. Those poor clerks. Gee whiz it took a while for a kid to pick out five or ten pieces of candy!

I liked those licorice records, bull's eye caramels, lik-em-ade, candy cigarettes, and at Halloween, those waxy lips that you could chew after the holder wore off.

Always loved Almond Joy. Still do. Also Junior Mints, my favorite movie treat.

tomwed 10-01-2014 10:14 AM

Fritos [they still are]

In my Catholic school before going outside for recess 2 appointed 8th grade girls sold snacks in the basement. I got 5 cents to save or spend on a snack. Everyday for 8 years while waiting my turn I made myself a promise. I would buy something different, move on. Everyday I panicked and bought the Fritos so as not to hold up the line. Sister was watching. NEXT!. :)

No wait --- I think it was really a Chunky - is that the right name - sounds weird. Awesome piece of chocolate with raisins and I believe it was square. Did it have nuts??? oh brother a senior moment. Help me out here.

It was Chunky here is it's history;

The Chunky candy bar was introduced in the late 1930s by New York City candy maker, Philip Silvershein. Looking for a name for his candy bar, then made with cashews, chocolate, raisins and Brazilian nuts, he decided on Chunky, the nickname of his "chunky" granddaughter.

My favorites were the cherry cordials that were wrapped in red foil and chocolate licorice that was hollow. When we went to the movies we put a box of Sno-Caps into the box of hot popcorn and end up with chocolate popcorn. Hmmmm

Patty55 10-01-2014 08:54 PM

Ice Cream BonBons. When I was 15 I worked at the candy counter at the movies, they weren't sealed ...so... I took one from each box. I figured that in the dark watching a movie nobody would notice. Guess what? Someone could actually count to five in the dark. :1rotfl:

Thank-you for posting.
Given the chance, I and everyone I knew, would do that too.
Are you from New Jersey?

My favorite also. They had a commercial done by Arnold Stang that went "Chunky...what a chunk of chocolate". They had Brazil nuts, roasted peanuts, and raisins in them. You can still buy them on the internet for about $1 each.

BarryRX 10-02-2014 07:56 AM

Yankee doodles, chunkys, Milky Way, and raisenettes.

pookieroo 10-02-2014 08:17 AM

I remember Mallow cups, which were marshmallow. All the rest were great too.

My favorite, probably only in the South were

Tom's peanut butter bars

I never invested enough time eating junk to develop a favorite. I didn't think it was that important in the overall scheme of things. And I didn't get fat so I guess I should feel left out, but I don't. I feel healthy.

Eating candy promotes weight gain and diabetes.

I assume you're joking. What's a Yankee doodle? Is that what the Yankees did when they went to the men's room? :)

Thanks, I was just checking out his anti-inflammation food pyramid. I see plain dark chocolate at the very top. But what does he mean by plain? Does he mean sugarless? If so, why didn't he just say, "sugarless dark chocolate"? Did he purposely leave it open to misinterpretation? Sugar promotes inflammation.

I occasionally buy a bar of baking chocolate (it's sugarless of course). Then once or twice a week I'll melt a small amount (thumb-nail size) in cooked steel-cut oats. Then I'll add some chopped nuts. Mmmm! I guess you could say that's my favorite chocolate bar.

Nope, not joking, but I only ate the organic not farmed version. It's all good.

I could be wrong, and if I am I'm sure you won't hesitate to inform me but I think if your pancreas is functioning normally a cupcake now and then isn't a death sentence. Don't forget, we had the organic free range Yankee Doodles.:a040:

I prefer to think that having a Yankee Doodle/Devil Dog/Yodel breakfast provides immunity.

My brother was always very lean and healthy in his younger years. But it seems he developed a "sweet-tooth" as he got older and slowly gained a lot of weight over several decades. I think that suggests he may have developed insulin resistance, overworking his pancreas. And lots of sugar kept his body acidic which cancer thrives on. I don't know if he developed diabetes but he died of pancreatic cancer and there was never any family history of this.

It just shows that the risk is there even if one supposedly has good genes.
