Default Where Do Bands Rehearse?

Like many (most?) Villagers I’m working on getting someone to move here; after 40 years in bands he’s not ready to give it up. So...

If a person is forming a rock ‘n roll band (usual 2-3 guitars, drums, keyboard) where would they rehearse? There seems to be a bit of a shortage of soundproof basements.

Also, in case anyone knows offhand, how do you get selected to perform at the Town Squares?

Thanks.

Hi Walt. It's amazing to me that no one has an answer to your question! I didn't think there was a single question that the TOTV regulars couldn't answer or offer a suggestion as to where to get an answer! And I mean that sincerely, not a wise guy comment. Of course, I don't have an answer either, but I'm still a Wannabe. We will be moving to TV sometime early next year (assuming we sell the house in VA!) and I'll be looking for people to hook up and play with. I play guitar and sing, and have been in bands since 1965. So I'll be looking for bandmates and trying to find out where to rehearse when I get there. Maybe by then your friend will have moved down also and we can get something started!

I was also surprised. 1965 is about when he (brother) started also. If he makes it down here it wouldn't be for a while yet... lots of things still "up in the air." Hmmm... I wonder what the "groupie" situation is like in TV? Yikes!!

I have played with a couple of groups here. Sometimes at someone's house. If you start a club and open it to all players, you can generally get a room at one of the rec centers. Don't worry, you will come up with something. I am from Va. also, Mechanicsville to be exact, how about you? To play at Town Square it takes a good band but also a few connections. That becomes a job though and most people I play with here are not looking for a job.

Hi Walt,
I don't know if there is a common practice area, or how one gets a TV gig. I would suggest calling TV Recreation Dept., Phone: 352-753-1716.

I think TV is a great place for retiring artists of all stripes. It must be, as we have so many talented peeps here. I'm glad to hear of more who are interested.

Mokey, I lived in Mechanicsville for 2 years (still work there) and now live at Brickshire in Providence Forge. I still go to a Mechanicsville church and have a band that does a concert there a couple times a year (mostly popular music with the occassional spiritual song thrown in). I'm also not really looking for a paying gig. I find it a lot of fun to get a bunch of people together, rehearse for a while, then put on a free concert maybe a couple times a year. Many of the people I have worked with are good musicians and singers who have never performed rock and popular music for an audience. It's a thrill to get them up to performance level and let them get the thrill of a live audience reaction to their music. When we get closer to moving, I'll get in touch.

Pturner, thanks for your usual helpful advice. I very much enjoy reading your posts.

Walt, get that drummer down to TV! A really good drummer is a godsend!

Default Looking for bad next winter

I know its a ways off but time flies. We bought a house in TV last year and have been there 5 times since. Next year I retire and will be looking to play with other muscians for the 6 months I will be there. I have played bass and sung lead for years in working bands around western NY. I also play and write on acoustic guitar. Wont want to give that up once I retire. If anyone wants to contact me and exchange song lists I will learn them all and be ready when I get there. Looking forward to many more years of fun making great music with great people. Call Nick at 716-754-2150

I will be visiting all of October with checkbook in hand. Hopefully, I'll find an acceptable property and buy this winter or early spring. I am up for playing with anyone. When I come down, it will be with a pro-tools 10 project studio. I play mainly guitar...but, using odd tunings and lots of effects - from Eventide delays, boss and line 6 pedals, TC Electronics, plus Roland guitar synths and a VG-99. I can also embarrass myself on a Yamaha Motif synth.

I'd love to work up stuff with other folks for fun. I'm a fairly decent writer.
