Since I was born in 1950 I don't have a great memory, but my parents moved to Florida in 1959, so I know right away if it was the 50's.
  • I remember a neighbor would hold hula-hoop contests and she would give away candy bars to the winner, and I won many times.
  • I remember the ice cream man and his truck playing music. My favorite was 'dilly lilly', which was like sherbert in a push-up cup.
  • I remember in the third grade everyone was so excited on the bus one morning that the Baltimore Colts beat the New York Giants in overtime to win the championship.
  • I remember seeing the Orioles play the Indians and Rocky Colavito hit four homers for Cleveland. It was 1959 and my last trip to see the O's for a long time. Although with spring training I did see O's play every March.
  • I remember in rural Baltimore us kids didn't have a park nearby to play. So a neighbor who was a builder, got his tractor and with the permission of the owner, he cleared a big field and we made a baseball diamond and played games.
  • Finally, when I was about six, I remember a neighbor's dog getting loose and I got bit by a German Shepherd and I had to get many rabies shots in the stomach, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

Playing stickball in the street with a broom handle and a Spaulding rubber ball.
The penny candy store and the good Humor man for Ice cream. Neighbors on their stoops, talking to other neighborbors. The streets were safe.

Oh wait, there is a stickball club on Sundays at 8:30 AM behind the Villages H.S, if anyone is interested.

Who woulda thunk it?????

None around here in TV. I do remember a few in South Fla in the Everglades. My favorite memories as a kid was all the "seasons".......YoYo, kite flying , etc.

There were no "big box" stores back then and one of the things I remember from the late 50's/early 60's was that pretty much all the stores would close at noon or 1pm on Wednesdays and then stay open until 8 or 9pm on Thursdays. Most stores closed by 6pm on Saturday evening and almost NOBODY was open on Sundays.

I was born in 1951 so I was there for most of those years. I remember getting up at 4 am to deliver newspapers year-round in Ohio. I remember getting mad at the social worker wanting to cut my mother's only income from ADC of $135/month by the $20 month I made delivering those papers. I remember getting my first cooking lesson's from my mother since she was unable to get out of bed due to having MS. I remember learning how to paint when I painted the exterior of the home. I remember the Sisters' of the Poor dropping off bags of groceries. I remember my mother being the strongest person in the face of adversity I have ever met. I learned a lot in that decade not from being a kid but a lot about life.

We had a toy store a few blocks away from the grade school . Every spring a man would come to the school playground with the " newest " kind of yo yo! He would show off ; walk the dog.. around the world and more I cannot remember:). Of course we would all spend our saved up allowance and buy the " neat" yo yo....Pop rocks, Fizzies,Turkish taffy, bulls eyes, Pink Owl bubble gum cigars, candy cigarettes, wax mouth and mustache,Archie comics, hats with yarn pigtails, girdles, slips, bobby socks, penny loafers, saddle shoes
